Good Morning Folks

My dentist says I need to have one of my back teeth (I presume it's the wisdom tooth) removed. However, I'm not so sure and would rather have a 2nd/3rd opinion.

Do you think I should register with another dentist in order to get another opinion? How would I choose which dentist to join?

Should I then go to the new dentist and just simply ask him/her for a 2nd opinion or just go for a regular check up and let him/her tell me that I need to tooth removed?

Thanks in advance

I’ve also wondered this in the past. Will the original dentist know you’ve been to a new one? (Do they request notes from previous dentist?)

Around my way you'll be lucky to 1) find a NHS dentist and 2) find a private dentist. Every waiting list is packed, unless your willing to travel. Hope it's easier near you.

Why do you believe your dentist is providing the wrong diagnosis?

Might be worth seeing if there's a teaching hospital local enough to you that offers dental services. I used to go to one in Leeds (and later used one in Bristol). You had to be prepared to let 5 or 6 students also have a look in your mouth, but it was free and I never had any problems.

Disclaimer: I've been out of the UK for nearly 30 years now so this suggestion might well be useless! smile

It would help to understand the reason he is suggesting it should be removed. It might be someone with professional knowledge on here can offer some advice.

That said if you are a paying customer and contact a private dentist for a second opinion I can't see why they wouldn't pass the opportunity of fleecing your wallet.

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your replies.

My NHS dentist says the reason why I need to have the wisdom tooth removed is because it is at an angle and in danger of touching the tooth next to it.

Also, I do have gum disease and find it difficult to reach my wisdom tooth with my brush.

I am thinking of going private to get a 2nd opinion.
