I’m tall and not thin but not stocky. I’m a hard gainer pretty much everywhere except my thighs which build relatively easily with running etc. I’ve been getting problems with lower back pain over the last few years with sitting down all day hammering away in people’s mouths probably not helping.

Anyway, I was pretty convinced that I had a serious disk issue but then happened upon an idea of stretching the quads and psoas muscles/tendons.

Thinking in for a penny, I gave it a try and the relief was total and instantaneous. I would never have guessed that a non intuitive stretch could do so much good. The effects only last a few minutes so it’s probably something that needs to be done regularly.

Out of interest, has anyone else had the same joy/relief with this stretch?

It’s more likely your hip flexors that are tight. You maybe loosened them a bit or the surrounding areas etc.

I've been through something similar with the aid of a physio to cure back pain.

The cause is that my quads are far stronger than most of the other muscles round the hips, including glutes and hams. I'm currently doing squats and hip thrusts to improve those and it's making a big difference to where my hips sit, as well as improving my back.

Driller, you've got a back problem and as quad stretches help then I suggest that you see a physio. If you're anywhere near Leicester I can recommend one, and one of my colleagues has had good results with one near Milton Keynes.

Sounds pretty much exactly what I have! Thanks for the suggestions, I’m in France so I might look a bit closer to home 😉

I imagine once they show you what stretches to do it’s just a question of doing them every day?

I'm also doing some exercises to build my glutes and quads. Nothing that takes longer than about fifteen minutes every other day.

I suffered for years with back pain, not bad enough to stop exercising, but I did give up squash / footie in my late 30s, gave yoga a try 3 years ago (now 58) and the back pain has pretty much disappeared, as previous poster said I think it came from tight hip flexors, those stretches were excruciating in the early days!

Pretty much what everyone else has said.

I would see a physio and work on glute strength and any imbalance you might have, as it's all connected.

Then if you want to make yourself cry, invest in one of these and go to town on your lower back and glutes hehe

I actually had little cause to use mine once I'd started strength training specific to lower back, glutes and core strength targeting some of the smaller forgotten muscles.

And lots of generic stretching and foam rolling.

Nothing relating to the quads will cause a disk issue. Tight lower back muscles - possibly. More likely quads affecting hamstrings, which most certainly can cause back problems. Again not with a disk though.

Stretching a tight muscle temporarily relieves the tightness. It does not address why it’s tight.

Weak, underused glutes- that’s the reason in the majority of cases. Use your glutes properly and it’ll sort out everything up/down stream.

Another perspective, I was struggling with similar issues but doing anything with my PT to build strength in glutes, or any exercise that needed an element of lower back strength was just agony as I couldn't get the form right.

A trip to the chiropractor worked wonders, no great surprise when he said I had all the typical issues you'd expect sitting at a desk. Now he's gone through the corrective process I'm finding the sessions with my PT and the gym in general are showing much better progress and pain free!

Get stronger. Stretches just relieve tightness. They do nothing substantial to any tissue. If you have a sore lower back, it is very likely because you are deconditioned.
