Root canal £850

I've had 2x done by John and IMHO you won't find anyone better. He only does root canal work! But it will cost the price that you have already mentioned. I was referred to him by my own dentist as my case wasn't straightforward. I have no other connection to this business than being a satisfied customer.

If your NHS dentist can't/won't do it, a "root canal specialist" can charge a lot.
A few months ago, following a check-up, I had an old (but non-problematic) filling replaced by a "dental therapist" -ie. a technician who must be much cheaper to employ than a proper dentist. I suffered huge pain in the tooth and jaw afterwards that prevented me sleeping and required constant painkillers. It was evidently not sealed properly, so I went back to the dentist.
The dentist declared (without even inspecting the tooth....) casually that I would need a root canal, done by a specialist for ~£700 (which was later revised to £850), or an extraction. I was suspicious, but in pain.
He then drilled a bit in attempt to do a point-of-no-return initial root canal penetration (but thankfully didn't break into the nerve canal(?) as the anaesthetic hadn't worked properly), and then put a very temporary covering filling in, which almost entirely removed the pain
Having complained to the practice about the poor filling and the seemingly poor advice, I saw another dentist, who had a look, declared that there was no issue with the nerve, removed the replacement filling and installed a new one -no pain.
Thankfully the original dentist hadn't drilled into the nerve when he tried, otherwise I would have needed the root canal completing.
I will never be going back to the original dentist.
Don't take dental advice at face value

If I’m ever suspicious I just go get a 2nd opinion.A few months ago I had an old (but non-problematic) filling replaced by a "dental therapist" -ie. a technician who must be much cheaper to employ than a proper dentist. Root canal at an NHS dentist is Band 2 and is £65.82.
I can only assume the £850 is a spectacular private dentist!
Probably needs a crown as well, which puts it in band 3. Still only 280 quid or so.I can only assume the £850 is a spectacular private dentist!
So many nhs dentists won't do them though. I guess not enough money in it.
I had root canal mid 2019
Its a great place, reception and waiting area is a bit like sc-fi lounge. Valet parking. Dentist has two assistants and what seems like all the latest gear.
In addition he is a cool guy and was happy to swing a little camera round so I could watch the op on a screen they have on on a flexible arm.
Dentist said tooth probably only last a year or so. March this year - tooth finally gave up.
Back off to dentist. Crown required. Not something I’ve ever had before.
Temp one fitted and a week later a proper one.
Happy with all of that for £300..root canal and crown.
My mum needs a crown. Quoted £750. I’ve told her to wait until we hit ‘amber’ and get it done here.
They get quite a few patients in from Australia for implants. My dentist offers a guarantee that involves him covering flight cost and accommodation if patient has to come back because a problem.
Benefits of living abroad.

I was quoted £300 for one about 15 years ago when I was about 16. NHS dentist was about £50. My current dentist private dentist has tripled their prices so haven't been for about two years.
Since July they've stopped NHS treatment but you can get botox, lip fillers and the usual startled cat look for £400 a pop.
