My wife was given the oxford AstraZeneca vaccine towards the beginning of the roll out. she's under 30 but has suffered and been hospitalised because of blood clots in the past. she had bad side effects after the vaccine and was wiped out for days.
between her having the vaccine and needing her 2nd dose the vaccine was banned for under 30s because of the blood clot risk.

We are at the stage where she requires the second jab but are worried about the AstraZeneca. would it be safer asking for another vaccine, or not having the second jab giving her medical history?

You need to speak to whatever specialist she sees for her condition.

There do seem to be plenty of people who've mixed and matched vaccine types (I believe the boosters will be Pfizer irrespective of which vaccine you had previously).

What happens after the first vaccine doesn't seem to correlate with what happens after the second; I was zonked after the first but no side effects with the second. My wife, and our neighbour, had nothing from the first but flu-like symptoms from the second.

I'd suggest asking a qualified professional.

In Germany for e.g. They mix vaccines so I'd be making sure she gets anything other than az. Odd that she got given that to be honest! While the blood clot chance is low it's better to not risk it when there are alternatives. My brothers gf is in NHS and under 30, she had hers very early as expected and got given Pfizer.

Counter point to the last response....

Current findings are that there is a lower occurance of blood clots after the AZ vaccine than the general population who haven't/hadn't.

I was knocked out for a day or so with first, but nothing on second. I also had coronavirus last year which supposedly makes the side effects worse.

This highlights the ‘random’ nature of things.
My wife had 3 awful days after the first AZ, fine after the second….& I have pals who have had the reverse…..or the same, but with Pfizer.

Defo speak to her specialist: I doubt there is a ‘guaranteed’ answer to this one, unfortunately.

It seems generally to be the case that the second AZ is much less unpleasant than the first.

True for me - absolutely no side effects from the second, my wife had the opposite.

Might be worth checking that her first AZ is in the “approved list” for the EU too. There was a batch from India that they refuse to recognise so could be an issue if you’d planned on travel through Europe.

As for the injections, everyone I know who’ve had them and suffered bad side effects had them on the first but little to nothing on the second.

Regardless of side effects, I still don't have full smell back (after 9 months - can't smell petrol, bleach etc) and I had a very mild dose, so would rather not get it again

A history of clotting doesn’t mean that you will suffer clots from the vaccine. The vaccine clotting issue is a very specific reaction/issue. The incidence of clotting is much less on second jab rather first AZ, which is when the vast majority have happened.

There are 411 clots cases, of which 43 were
Second dose cases the rest are first dose.

the professionals have said she's better having the second AZ rather than mixing them
