Has anyone done one and if so who are best? Ideally one that govt would recognise the results for.

Not for travel, no. It’s to rule out based on current illness/symptoms.

If you just want to see if you have Covid then go to a test centre?

If you have symptoms that might be COVID - especially fever, new cough or change or loss of taste or smell, you need to book a PCR test, either by post or your nearest test centre. You can also get tested if you have had recent conract with a case or have other symptoms like runny nose or fatigue that sometimes is seen with the Delta variant. And please self isolate (along with household members) until you get the result as you obviously could present a risk to others if it turns out you are infected.
