Injured my toenail yesterday annoyingly just as I have started to get back in to 5 a side. Was running then stopped all of a sudden, foot slid in my shoe with the nail hitting the inside. For a minor injury the pain is unreal! The nail itself has turned purple due to the blood pooled up underneath I presume. Is this something that will heal itself and can I continue playing once the pain has subsided?

Hot pin through the nail let’s the blood out and releases the pressure. Up to you if you think it’s a good idea, but it doesn’t hurt unless you push a bit too hard.

Some never grow back, to have that normal toe nail look

Mine didn't, looks spooky now.

This. Make sure you have something to catch the squirt when it goes...

Decided to leave it as it is, don’t want to risk infection. One of the most painful things I’ve experienced though no exaggeration. Think it’s starting to heal but definitely no football for a few weeks.

Prepare for 6 months to a year with one big black nail, the black will slowly grow out over this time. biggrin

Or it will fall off.

Once it starts flapping around it's easiest just to pull it off. Does feel odd taking a pair of pliers to your own toenails though...

Or you can do it with a 1mm (or less) drill bit - just hold it in between your fingers and twist it to & fro until it breaks through.

Whichever method you use, don't press too hard as it will make you jump a bit if you go through the nail into the bed unexpectedly!

Here's one I prepared earlier:

I once picked up a new shock absorber in it's box, and at about 30cm above my big toe the box decided to open and the damper bottom hit my toe. I was stood on a hard floor.

It's weird because a new toe nail seemed to grow out under the old one, and it was all weird. 5 years on and it's still a weird nail and about 50% thicker than it should be, and grows about half as fast.

Weird things these toenails.

Mine ended up with a blood blister under the nail due to tight boots and a 36mile walk. That was in October

The pain was quite bad due to the pressure so off to screw fix and a few 1mm drill bits. Drilled it by hand. No pain. As cappo says, just do it slowly.

The nail is almost back to normal now, I think it came off in jan so it’s gonna be almost a year between injury and it being back to normal.

Saw my GP about this as the nail hasn't grown at all since the injury and is still black. It's also now got a bulge forming at the bottom. Been referred to podiatry - apparently they'll remove the nail, which I'm not looking forward to!
