In a five-person household, one person catches COVID. They have to s/e for 10 full days, as do the other members of the household.

Day 5, another member develops COVID. They have to s/e for 10 full days. However, to my mind the member who caught it first should still be able to cease s/e after 10 days, because they have had the disease and come through it.

My wife says I am wrong and that if someone else starts symptoms the clock re-starts for everyone. Which means that in the very worst case a family of five could be self-isolating for approaching two months.

I checked NHS resources online and whilst they don't explicitly support my understanding, they imply that I am correct. I called 111 to check and they said..."we don't know, call 119". However, 119 did not have a menu option to route my call appropriately.

Does anyone know the correct answer and ideally a link to the guidance online please?

The original case does not need to extend their isolation period if subsequently another member of the household tests positive. Normal rules regarding symptoms not persisting for the original case obviously still apply.

Can't give you a link but that's from someone working for NHS T&T.

Thanks. That is what I concluded. NHS guidance isn't at all clear on the matter it seems.

Here we go: gov.uk Stay at home illustration (pdf)

Mike's self isolation ends without extension despite Maria developing symptoms on day 4 and testing positive on day 7.

Thank you. Excellent diversity in that household.

Or just ignore the self isolation rules like my neighbours are.

Woman got covid, self isolate from the Monday, husband in and out all day on Monday and Tuesday in his council chariot, woman out a couple of times on the Monday. Husband tests positive on the Wednesday and both stay at home now... But just have their pregnant daughter and her boyfriend (who has also tested positive) round a few times, and another friend from another household, Oh yea and lets order stuff from a local take away last night too.

Gobby stes don't realise their voices are so loud that you can hear them in the garden.
