Hi

I have started on a Keto diet and was wondering what's the best advice around total calories consumption.

I note many of the Keto foods; cheese, nuts etc, are very calorie rich. I'm assuming that even if I get into a Ketosis state, but eat say over 2500 calories, my weight will not drop?

Plus what's the thoughts re Alcohol. I'm assuming Gin and diet Tonic no good as sweeteners don't support ketosis? A glass of dry red seems okay?
Thank you

Personally, I wouldn't focus on calories at all.

I've been on a Keto diet since 4 Jan this year and so far I've lost 25Kg. I've not counted calories, I've eaten what I fancied. In the first month I ended up skipping quite a few meals completely because I just wasn't hungry.

As for booze - red wine is ok, white is a bit challenging. I don't ever have anything with sweeteners in it, so can't comment on diet mixers

As you have noted, any keto snack is going to be high fat. That's extra fat to burn when you are supposed to be burning your own fat.

I would advise you eat big meals and don't snack. Then you can forget calories completely.

Alcohol is going to knock you out of ketosis for about 24 hours. I would keep it to one night a week, red wine or spirits and diet mixers are much better than beer or cider.

What I’ve figured out re keto is that it’s not a magic diet that makes you lose weight. Eating less calories than you burn is generally what does lead to the weight loss...

When I’m on keto I find it easier to stick to my daily calories intake as the fat from food keeps you feeling full for longer, therefore you eat less

This ^

Being in a calorie deficit is the ONLY thing that leads to weight loss.

Some find it easier on keto, some on paleo etc etc but the thing they all have in common for weight loss??? Calorie deficit.

It's that simple. The only actual recommendation to go on a ketogenic diet should be if you're epileptic.
