EMS (Electro Muscle Stimulation)

I had an advert pop up for a local gym doing EMS sessions. I thought TENS machines died a death in the 80's, does this stuff actually work or is another case of marketing over functionality?
A bit of googling suggests there might be some benefit as a recovery exercise several hours after working out, but not much evidence for it being any good on it's own. Anyone tried it?
