Opticians- how do you know a good one?
Discussion
I have always been very self critical of my own vision.
About 2 years ago I ended up in the local should have gone too...... and feel like I am now paying the price .
I’ve used varifocals for about the last 6/7 years and been happy, but since using the above, have always been
Unhappy with my quality of vision.
I now am almost unable to focus clearly on anything
Closer than 3 feet,so need to find an optician I can
Trust .....
Anyone know about this stuff?

Frankly our local one in Tesco gave the most thorough exam I’d even had. Now Vision Express, but seemed pretty competent last time I went. About 2 years ago I ended up in the local should have gone too...... and feel like I am now paying the price .

Identified high blood pressure (well, high eye pressure with recommendation & letter for doctor).
Also got me to perceiver with varifocals when I struggled (“try another 4 weeks, you can still have the money back if they are no good” - took me about 6 weeks until they ‘clicked’ !)
I have also always been very critical. Wore contacts for many years when younger, & would often be back at the opticians getting a tweak to the prescription- used a small local optician back then.
Regular eye tests are pretty ‘bread and butter’ for opticians, I’d have said.
You could always try a local independent.
I think my biggest gripe is that I have never been happy
With the lens they dispensed.
I went back a few times and they just blagged me off
With a “you need to get used to them bullst”....
My near sight right now is appealing and I need it
To do my job,so it’s very important for
Me to resolve the issue.

Both wife and I, and both kids, wear glasses and I have to say that the chains always changed lenses without hesitation. The odd time we tried an independent they were much less keen. With a “you need to get used to them bullst”....
I got my first pairs (BOGOF) of varificals from Specsavers and they were perfect. The Dispenser in that case seemed particularly competent - I never had any of the issues you hear of with varifocals, they just worked straight off. Second pairs less so - they replaced the lenses in both the second pairs without hesitation, they never seemed quite as perfect as the first pairs did though.
Not necessarily helpful to you, but I have had great service from both an independent optician (latterly) and previously one of the big chains (Specsavers). The same Specsavers branch diagnosed something quite serious in one of my dad's eyes which warranted a couple of trips to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
It might be helpful to say where you are, in case anyone has local recommendations. The only other thing I can think of is to ask for recommendations from your GP?

20 years ago vision express gave me a really thorough test and a week later I had my new glasses. They were awful, seriously awful. They kept telling me my eyes needed to adjust to the prescription. After complaining it turned out my name hadn't been written down on the paper trail. A new test sorted it out but I did wonder who was wearing my specs and how they coped. Never again.
Worn specs since I was 10. I am now 67. Did have a few years o contacts, wish I still ould but thy cannot get the balance right anymore
I found Vision Express good in the 80's but not one near me now
Specsavers OK but their frames all seem to fall apart. Wasn't happy with the last set of lenses, just didn't seem right but got the usual need to be used to them
Have used private too, just found them slower, more expensive and no better.
