Permission to access medical records
Discussion
For reasons I'd rather not go into here the company I work for have asked permission to access my medical records. I have some long-term health issues and whilst I agree in principle, should I go ahead ? My view is that I have nothing to hide but I wonder if my GP would agree with this.
GP in the NHS here. Based on NHS guidelines request for information should be relevant, for the right reasons, and not excessive. What are they looking for? To make adjustments or see if you’re fit to continue work? Many sick days? Ask. They may settle on a letter from GP saying you can safely continue with work. You’re within your rights to screen and withhold select information. If you haven’t been referred to occupational health yet this has likely come from occupational health. At the end of the day it’s about establishing whether you’re able to continue with them or not. As in are your projected sick days likely to increase, conditions worsen etc. No they cannot fire you for their predictions. Can they make adjustments etc. It’s as much as a covering themselves exercise as it is trying to assist you.
