Hi all

Been through a very stressful time lately with my Dad in a serious (but now improving) condition in hospital. Been constantly worried fearing the worst not sleeping properly etc

Over the past few days I’ve developed some very painful red lesions and small white/yellow spots in my mouth especially lower half and some on my gums too. Absolutely kills when eating hot or spicy foods and when brushing. Glands in my neck are all swollen and painful.

Should I be checking in with my doctor or dentist tomorrow? Any idea what it could be? Assuming it’s a stress related infection of some kind. For info I’m 29 male and in generally good health non smoker.

Assuming they are ulcers get some Bonjela, doesn't take long to start making a difference.

I get oral sores when I'm run down/exhausted. I tend to eat round them, try to take a bit better care of myself. They have turned into a good early warning system....

Multi vitamins and a bit more sleep if you can.

I find drying the site fully before applying bonjela or salt to be effective, although it will sting.

My whole family is very susceptible to mouth ulcers. Best tips I can give you -

- Stay away from acidic fruits such as pineapple
- Use a toothpaste with no Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) such as Sensodyne Pronamel
- Get used to rubbing gels on your gums - my personal favourite is Medijel from Savers - It has a good amount of Lidocaine in it which completely numbs it in seconds and actually sticks to it - I find that bonjela slides off an ulcer and you have a ball of gel just slipping around your mouth, numbing everything

Saw my dentist and it seems to be some kind of viral infection hence the swollen glands. Could even be mono apparently. Been prescribed Difflam mouthwash and told to wait it out. Could hardly brush my teeth last night due to the pain and bleeding!

Sounds very similar to what I have.
I was diagnosed with Lichen Planus. Initially I had it on my skin, I then started getting it in my mouth, this was about 15 years ago.
I was given a steroid mouth wash to control it.
I find it flares up with stress. I recently lost my Father and work had been st, I have had the first flare up in about 2-3 years.
I can't eat spicy food as it hurts like hell.
Although it is quite painful at times I seem to be able to manage it with the mouthwash..
Good luck.

Hi that’s interesting. I will mention it to my doctor or dentist if it doesn’t get any better. I feel bogged down and my neck glands are swollen so I think it’s an infection.

Can you eat spicy food inbetween flare ups then?

To be honest I don't really like spicy foods, but even when I do Have a midly spicy meal I get a flare up..
My dentist first noticed an ulcer and when I said I have had it several months alarm bells rang with him aed sent me to hospital.
I had 2 pieces of flesh removed from my inner cheeks for a biopsy. The result came back as a fungal infection caused by the lichen planus.
Get your self checked out mate...

Good to hear that the mouthwash works for you. Has this lichen planus got bigger or spread in your mouth over the years or is it still in that same spot?

Still in the same spot on the right hand side of my mouth. When I get a flare up it appears on the inside of my cheeks which can be very uncomfortable.

The biopsy was the worst thing, two big pieces from the inside of my cheeks with stitches cry

I used to always get the when tired and/or run down. Now I have one or multiple ulcers about 50% of the time. Started after I had covid, not sure it’s related. Not always in same place but very frustrating. Just put up with them and they go in about a week.

Any advice?

Your body is obviously still very tired from Covid. Give yourself a break if you can? I know it's extreme and barely worth thinking about, but try going vegan for a month - with adding zero sugar and alcohol. It will either help you or make you realise living with these bd things isn't so bad after all... hehe

I imagine you're relieved they didn't find anything worse than an infection then. I had mouth problems, turned out to be oesophageal cancer. Couldn't eat spicy food for at least two years, taste, smell anything or produce saliva properly (still can't). Gave me some perspective though.

Don't want to be too dramatic but have you had any flu-like symptoms ?

Mouth ulcers can be a symptom of a Coxsackie virus infection which can be very nasty and end up damaging your heart (viral myocarditis). Ask me how I know.

Slowly slowly recovering from this now but still on a soft and bland food diet. At its worst pretty much all of my gums were super inflamed and bloody and quite a few were painfully ulcerated. Dentist has referred me to an oral specialist at the dental hospital to check for any underlying issues as it is quite an unusual case but the acute onset seems to suggest a mixture of stress and infection related.

Not really but at times I felt as if my body was definitely fighting something off and glands in my neck were all swollen and tender (one or two still are)
