Talk to me about standing desks. And have you tried one?

What do you think about a riser (e.g. Harmoni) versus a 'regular' standing desk?

Use them in the work office all the time - at first I thought this would be a novelty but no they are good.

We had electric desks where the whole thing moved up or down.

It’s really good for your posture and well-being.

I suffer from a bad back which gets worse when sitting for long periods. I use one of these things:

I already had a desk so didn't want to invest in a new one. It gives you the option of both sitting and standing as I find standing for long periods also affects my back.

The only drawback would be if you need a lot of space for books, papers etc. I work pretty much paperless these days so not a problem for me.

Risers are normally hideous; I wouldn't have one at home.

Electric standing desks are much better than I expected though. Wouldn't be without one now. It is cheaper to buy the frame and top separately in my experience.

How much roughly are you looking at? Im now full time WFH and we get a one off payment next month for office set-up and might be interested to get one.

There are a lot of them on Amazon now under £300. Just search "standing desk frame electric dual motor". The one I actually bought is currently £369

A cheap top from Ikea was £20.

I have an IKEA desk and love it. I spend most days standing all day and only put it down for hobbies at the weekend.

If you are going for multiple monitors and other stuff then check the lifting ability.

They are excellent.

I would recommend an electric one if you can.

I used a manual one in shared works space a while back and found it a faff, and didn’t change the height much.

Electric makes it so easy. I’ve got a 4 screen mount on mine and it doesn’t struggle.

After mulling it over, I reckon an electronic riser would be ideal. But can anyone recommend an electronic one?

Kenny, please could you let me know the product name for this desk riser?

Agreed. My son bought a smart electric frame and the top from IKEA. Worked out much cheaper for same result.

I bought this one in January on Amazon. It’s been excellent. It’s very heavy and stable so I wouldn’t want to sit it on a flimsy desk. It’s also quite large so the depth of the desk should be considered.

We have one of these that we used for quite a while and works really well;

We’ve now changed the office so it’s up for sale if anyone is interested.

Yes - I got a local Dutch version of "Harmoni" (by-ed.com).
Almost identical but only EUR109.

I like as it packs away in seconds and I can use it on any table. Find it really useful to switch between standing and sitting.

I have the same frame and a nice bamboo top on it. It’s been in use daily for almost a year now with no issues. Happily lifts 2x28” screens, desktop computer, laptop, iPad and whatever mugs etc are on the top. Only issue is that the auto-stop on lowering seems over sensitive and sometimes stops the movement due to cables trailing on the wall rather than any real blockage

Probably still better than sitting, but does standing in the same position for a long time risk getting varicose veins ?

I find that I don’t stand in the same place. If I’m typing a lot continuously I shift weight foot to foot. If I stop to think I take a step back. If I’m on a call I move around a bit more than that

I don't know about varicose veins, but if your instinct is to stand all day you'll get sore feet! You will want to switch it about, and maybe wear shoes with some padding.
