Meralgia Paraesthetica
Discussion
Has anyone else experienced this .
Imagine the numb feeling on your face when you have a jab at the dentist , now transfer this to the area on the outer part of your leg from kneecap to thigh. There is total numbness of the skin in that area , but an underlying pain similar to a burning/stinging feeling at the slightest pressure .
I have had this since before Christmas , my GP has given me links to medical directories which explain the condition and that there is no main cause other than possible trauma to the lateral cutaneous nerve on the hip which supplies feeling to the area .
There is no treatment other than pain killer creams , and in most cases it just goes away .
So my question is , anyone had this ? does it self cure? How long ?

Never had it but have seen patients with it. If it persists for more than 6 months then I would refer for ultrasound scan to look at where the nerve emerges from the pelvis. The radiologist doing the scan can inject the area with a bit of steroid which can hasten recovery in some cases. There is a surgical option to decompress the nerve but I’ve never done it. 25mg amitryptilline at night is good for relieving nerve pain whilst you wait for recovery to happen.
