Mail order prescription glasses anyone?
Discussion
I've just had a pair of frames reglazed with Nikon Ultimate varifocals with driver coating for £280 from Fashion Eyewear.
https://www.fashioneyewear.co.uk/
They received the frames on Saturday, I had my glasses back the following Wednesday
Bog standard lenses starts at £30 if you send them the frames. Nikon with drive coating (£50) are £124
I've used them a few times and they've always been good.
PS try and find out your PD (Pupil Distance) if you can as you'll need it for your order and it'll save you attempting to measure it yourself.

I got a pair from https://www.speckyfoureyes.com/ on a whim, as they had a super cheap deal going on Animal frames (I think I was under £20 with an extra £10 for thin lenses) and I wanted a spare pair for living in coverall pockets.
Rather impressed - I want to say they aren't the same quality as the £200 Oakleys with £150 worth of fancy lenses I use day to day, but I can't really - other than the weight and them looking different, the internet cheapos are just as good as the fancy ones.
Ended up buying a second pair and a pair of sun glasses as well. I still buy the fancy glasses for day to day use (I can justify that because I wear them all the time and I am a brand tart) - but for a set that gets kicked about and a spare in the car, there is really nothing wrong with the internet.
As above, get your PD and prescription right and you get the same service you do from the opticians - I know the high street opticians must be struggling with guys like me who get a test and then buy online, but over the years I reckon I have probably spent upwards of £5k on glasses and will continue to do so, so I don't feel too bad.

I needed some cheap glasses for work, something I didn’t mind if they got paint on etc so tried goggles 4u, bought a pair full prescription for £11.95, took a few weeks to arrive but when they did I liked them so went back and bought a few more different pairs of various styles and prescription. (I need different prescriptions for reading, pc work, close up work)
I think the most I’ve paid is £25, pick which pair I wear depending on my mood, rarely if ever use the £3/400 pairs and tbh am unlikely to spend that sort of money on a pair of glasses again.

do most places hand over the prescription without a fuss?
They (opticians) give you your prescription readily eough, what they withhold is your PD (Pupil Dilation/distance??) measurement is which how far apart your pupils are that the glass maker needs to know where to positon the prescription/lenses for you.The on line sellers can measure this for you if you send them a photo with ruler etc,
Debunking the Opticians myths, and is one of the reasons why I doubt I'll ever buy from an opticians again yet I'm now spending more on glasses in a year than I ever have done!
Have bought online from a few different places, never had a problem and its a lot cheaper.
The last time I bought from a opticians was boots - used purely because they had a frame I wanted.
Trainee did the eye test, when I got the glasses I had a partial blurring effect on the right side - left it a day or two in case it was just me adjusting, nope, something wrong - go back, she'd got the cyl part wrong on that eye, they had to cop for a re-glaze to correct. Obviously if this went wrong when using an online supplier it would be a pain, I keep old prescriptions and compare to ensure that a new one looks kind of right.
I moved to nline for the cost saving, but also frame choice, seems to be less choice than ever on the high street now.

I’m one of the senior managers at SelectSpecs. Any questions let me know.
Can you manage complicated lenses, astigmatism and varifocal for instance?I'm all for saving money but can it really be that easy to sell glasses to punters without seeing them in person?
I thought accurate measurements had to be taken. Particularly varifocal glasses. How can taking a selfie with a printed paper ruler stuck to your head be good enough? I have a few friends who had so much grief with online glasses that they gave up and went back to Specsavers.

I had 14, yes 14 visits to Specsavers the last time I had new glasses before they got them right.I'm all for saving money but can it really be that easy to sell glasses to punters without seeing them in person?

This time I shall be getting my eye test at the local University Ophthalmic school and get the prescription filled online.

Okay, the Specsavers you went to are fking hopeless too!
Can you imagine dealing with an online supplier with the problem you had?
Would have been easier than having to go to their bloody premises each time. 15 mins eachway minimum plus half an hour in the shop each time waiting to be seen even though I had an appointment and arrived before time on each occasion. Can you imagine dealing with an online supplier with the problem you had?
fking hopeless is an understatement. Even the manager (who was on the verge of leaving to go back to selling cars after the constant cock ups he had to deal with from the labs) agreed it was a complete shambles.

I've used SelectSpecs for several pairs of reading glasses and one pair of distance glasses. All were excellent for the price and the last pair that I bought are the most comfy ones that I own and I'd have picked them off the rack on the high street.Be aware that delivery takes a while - don't imagine that you will get them in couple of days.
I am not sure that I would use them for varifocals, but maybe I'll change my mind
Requests for Slim:
- I know that there are thousands of frames, but better pictures (more and higher res) would make it easier to see what you are getting.
My last 4 pairs of varifocals came from GlassesDirect.....free home trial for frames helps.
No problems with my prescription: as mentioned, you do need your PD measurement.
Not just because of rip-off pricing on the high street - the prices are only a little cheaper for varifocals - but I really struggled to find frames I liked in 3 or 4 local opticians!

I’ll never forget Sir John Harvey Jones in his tv program Troubleshooter, in which he advised struggling businesses.
The guy made glasses frames that retailed for over £100 (30 years ago)
He asked what they cost to make and he replied, a couple of quid, he sold to the trade at less than £10.
So each to their own on saving some money..
