Might seem like a dumb question but I am really interested in this.

For all of you out there how have / have had Covid, after the diagnosis were you able to rationalise how you might have caught it? Did you meet up, commute with others, not wash hands, stand too close to others in shops etc, or were you completely bemused as to how you might have caught it?

I have not seen much reported about this and I'm curious.

If you stay at home, wash your hands, use sanitising gel, wear a mask when out, assiduously obey social distancing, never meet up with anyone else and work from home what are your chances of still getting it?

I ask because I'm interested in better understanding the real transmissibility of Covid (new and old strain).

Is it really the case that this thing is ripping through the population DESPITE everyone following the guidelines, or is it more that case that those who do get it have usually put themselves in a situation where the likelihood of catching it was elevated?

I think it is important to understand this. Are people being too relaxed, or is this just a seriously contagious virus.

I have a scientific and microbiology background but it is still not clear to me how this is spreading. BTW I fully accept that for a lot of people it is not possible to completely remove the risk of catching it - kids in school, commuting, type of work etc.

Personally we live (wife and I) in the Scottish countryside, have no kids and work from home. I shop once or twice a week and an really careful to follow both the existing Covid guidelines and the behaviours that I was taught in the microbiology labs as much as possible. So far we have been lucky.

So what's is the consensus?

I think you'll get wildly differing answers depending upon context of each person.

Back in spring, I could count on one hand the number of people I knew to have caught Covid. This time, I need several hands and I would say that based upon those I know to have caught it, the common denominator is kids at school - they either have them, are them or work at schools. I would say that this accounts for around 80% of the cases I'm aware of.

My son caught it before Christmas. He's a PT at a Gym and the only place he has been going this past year so it stands to reason he got it there. Whilst he doesn't train them directly, the Gym he works at is popular with local Uni Students.

I know of a couple of people hammered by it who claim to have not seen one other person or gone anywhere since last March. They leave the shopping outside for 24 hours and then wipe it all over etc. They reckon it must've been the post. I reckon one of them has a secret second family.

Interesting. Agree that post could be a transmission route - or secret tinder dates!

Deliveries and post are the one thing that has been constant or actually more frequent I guess.
