It's a bit of a minefield for me, can someone recommend good quality omega 3 fish oil capsules?

I believe the numbers of EPA and DHA levels are what's the most important thing?

Thanks

I have plenty of tuna, it's the only fish I can stomach. I'd like a top up of making sure I get enough fish in my diet. Seems it has really good long term benefits...

Depends what fish/shellfish you're eating, how much and how often (in terms of whether it will impact your health).

Like you, I don't eat fish other than tuna. I take a Boots Omega Oils 3 6 & 9 daily but on my last MyProtein order I added one of their Omega 3-6-9 Softgels. It doesn't look like there's a huge difference between the two though?

Haven't found anyone else that beats it for price and EPA/DHA content.

It's highly unlikely you need to be supplementing with omega 6. Most people in the West consume far too much omega 6. It's in the industrial vegatable oils and these are used in just about everything that comes in a packet or box. Omega 3:6 ratio should ideally be 1:1 but a huge number of people are getting 1:15 to 1:25. You may of course be eating butter, using lard, avoiding processed food already in which case you're looking after your health. But this isn't the case for most people. Omega 9 is of course monounsaturated eg oleic acid in olive oil/advocados. Omega 3 and 6 are polyunsaturated. Sorry if preaching to the choir btw. Rule of thumb for most is eat more omega 3 and 9, and avoid 6.

Various debates as to whether tuna is a valid source of Om3.

https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/fish-and-she...

Some manufacturers claim it does but its not a recognised source for school meals and NHS say does not count.

I don't have the worst diet but I'll admit it's not very varied. I'm far from an expert on it all I'll be the first to admit - would it be better to change to one that omits Omega 6? I just went with a '1-a-day' from Boots' selection, figured it couldn't be a terrible move.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert either but I have done a lot of hobby research in the last year into nutrition. I doubt the tablet you're taking is harmful in any way, don't get me wrong. But as I say, food manufacturers use vegetable oils in just about everything they make so omega 6 is not something you will conceivably be short of. Omega 6 isn't in itself harmful but if you have too much then it is. There is an absolute minefield of info out there but as I say the upshot is that most people would do well to supplement with omega 3 (specifically EPA and DHA). Oily fish is the best source but if you're like me and are a fish dodger (apart from tuna and fish fingers lol) then a capsule is the best source. Personally I take Superself Omega 3 High Potency but there are a few good alternatives on this thread. I imagine Boots do a high strength omega 3 capsule too.

Looking specifically at yours you're getting 85mg of EPA and 55g of DHA. Typically other recommendations are for 990mg and 660mg so you can see the difference. Boots will sell you whatever you will buy.....

Re those advocating fish;

Large, long lived, carnivorous fish such as tuna, swordfish, etc should be kept to a minimum as they typically contain high amounts of mercury. Similarly, farmed fish like much of the supermarket salmon and trout lack the nutrient density of their wild-caught brethren.

Smaller, short lived fish like sardines, mackerel and herring are better sources for your omega 3s. Enjoy the skin, bones, heads, eyes - the whole fish for best nutrition.

I'm not a fan of fishy tasting stuff so struggle to eat enough fish.
Problem solved with the Healthspan Orange flavoured cod liver oil:

Just pop a teaspoon in my muesli in the morning along with some dates and a bit of dark chocolate and I have an indulgent chocolate orange breakfast smile
