Home Dumbbell Sets - why so expensive!
Discussion
Since March I have been using my usual committing time to workout in the 'home gym'.
I have now out grown my generic plastic dumbbell set and I would now like to start purchasing some rubber dumbbells (fixed, non adjustable) as and when I progress.
I am shocked at the price of just a pair of rubber dumbbells. Why are they so expensive?
I am not looking for ultra heavy dumbbells, I am only looking for a pair of 15kg.
Does anyone have any recommendations for something suitable for a home gym, without breaking the bank?

By them used. Find on classifieds and haggle or if ebay, bid on auctioned ones so its market price. Remember that they hold their value, so you are just storing your cash, so don't get too hung up about price.
If buying new, all the major sellers will give you 10%+ off straightaway, and then try for more. You just need to ask instore/phone/web chat. They are always keen to do deals.

One of our clients sells gym equipment online via their website and also by amazon / eBay etc
Big costs are delivery (some require a 2 man delivery) or come in multiple boxes. It has to be said that dumbbells are very popular at the moment as are the adjustable ones.
Not sure if it's against PH rules if I was to promote them but I would recommend them.

I had the same problem earlier in the year. I was considering buying an EZ curl bar for home before lockdown but put it off thinking it was a waste of money as I was already going to gym quite a lot. Then the lockdown happened and I desperately wished I had bought it as I couldn't find one anywhere. Same thing with some extra cast iron plates for the dumbbells I already had.
I eventually got the extra plates (bought a new dumbbell set rather than just extra plates) and the EZ curl bar from Argos. I think I got lucky with timing and caught them when they had recently restocked as the next day the stock was gone again. They seemed to have the only reasonable price though, most places had inflated their prices massively.

As a point of reference at the end of 2018 I bought on eBay 1-10kg dumbbell pairs in 1kg increments plus 12.5 to 25kg pairs in 2.5kg increments. The cheapest pair was £11 and the most expensive was £97.
The same seller on eBay is still offering the same products. Cheapest pair - 1kg - is £40. Most expensive is out of stock, but the 27.5s are offered at £240.
Ouch.

One word: lockdown.
Gyms closed (and again) and gym members wanted to continue training, shops sold out, ebay prices rocketed.
Being tight, I always opted for home training and most of my iron (not sand-filled) kit cost between 80p and £1.20 per kg. You'll be lucky to pay that for sand-filled weights now.
Prices will fall again... when you no longer want them. Supply vs demand.
If you can't afford or don't want to pay the ridiculous prices, then bodyweight training is the only way forward. Plenty of things to make it a challenge.

£15 for 2x 1kg pairs on the same site
Just following on from my earlier post, here's the plates my Son (with help from me!) made.
Got four sheets of old plaster board, stuck them together and cut a 18" diameter shape. 80mm hole in the middle. Made two moulds using sharp sand and a 2" pipe to keep the central hole intact. Made some strengthening using some steel mesh. Concrete and bosh - two 22kg plates for less than 15 quid.
One's a fraction heavier but not by much. Going to get some rubberised roof paint to finish them off.

I've already got some decent kit, but I really missed having a set of dumbbells of reasonable weight.
As soon as I heard the gyms in my area were going to be closing again, I did some digging and found a set of 2 x 40kg dumbbells for £269 delivered.
A wee bit pricey, but absolutely worth it. They've paid for themselves already, for me, over the past couple of weeks
Still some availability here - https://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-rubbe...
Edit: OP - 25kg is the lightest dumbbells available from there.

Wowser, they're pricey!
I've had a set if powerblock dumbells for 12 years now- they go up to 40kg in each hand. Quality kit and great if you've not got the space for a full set.
About 300 back in the day I think. Don't know what they cost at the moment or if they're available mind you!
