I eat a reasonable diet most of the time and I'm a good weight at the moment, but every so often I'll go through a phase of binging on sugary treats, then I'll get a grip of myself and cut them out completely for a few months before regressing again.

It will start with a pudding for dessert on the weekend. Then maybe a chocolate bar at work. This will increase to a share size bag of M&Ms/Maltesers after a while.

Perhaps a packet of biscuits. The first pack I'll eat half, then get a grip and chuck the rest in the bin. The next week I'll buy a second pack and scoff the lot.

I'll pick up a tub of ice cream, which will last me the week. Next week I'll buy another tub and it will only last the weekend.

Then I'll start worrying about putting weight on, but I still want the sugar so I'll substitute dinner for a bag of doughnuts or a pack of Snickers ice cream bars. This is the point I realise I'm out of control again and have to ban myself from it. It usually takes a few attempts at the ban before I can make it stick. This is the stage I'm currently in.

Does anyone else find their sugar consumption gradually gets out of control unless they abstain entirely?

You’re like a practical study on sugar addiction! wink

It’s a reasonably common thing, cold turkey is best hehe

I’m the same, I have a good diet....except the sugar and cake.

I like treats to much, when I want to loose weight, I cut sugar out and the weight falls of me.

Funny thing is, I'm often not especially enjoying what I'm eating, but it's like a mad compulsion. One way I have found to help me go cold turkey is by substituting the sweet food for more savoury food and to make sure I have a decent meal I enjoy. Even if it means increasing calorie intake for a while, it's worth it to get shot of the sugar.

I spoke to a lad at work today who has put on a pound or two over lockdown and he admitted to binging on a whole pack of 5 large cookies on the way home from work last night. So yes it probably is quite common, but people do it in secret!

It's almost as if the food producers know that most people love sugar ...

Also I think that in the current climate most of us will happily take any fleeting moment of dopamine hit in a pretty dreary lockdown world...

I find I crave sugar when I am tired. Thing's like the clocks changing can have an effect. Usually passes after a couple of days.

I find that 'sugar begets sugar'; meaning that when I have one sugary thing, that leads to a sugar crash, which can be 'solved' with more sugar.

The advice above, about choosing 'proper' savoury food is one I try to follow.

Yes I find if I can resist that first bit of chocolate or biscuit I'm ok but once I've started there's no stopping me

I find a handful of blueberries or some really strong cheese can blunt the craving, but it's tough

Funny thing is I really didn't have a sweet tooth until I quit drinking eight years ago. And I still struggle now with sugar cravings - quitting booze was a doodle in comparison...

I’d rather cheese and biscuits or something savoury over sweet, sugary things. However for a couple of years I kept waking in the middle of the night craving sugar. It got to the point where I had a bag of haribos beside the bed so I didn’t need to get up. I did wonder if it was related to a dip in blood sugar levels and I was heading towards diabetes but got checked and that wasn’t it.

I’ve managed to wean myself off my nightly sugar hit. However a guilty pleasure every now and again is opening a tin of condensed milk and devouring the lot in an evening. I restrict my condensed milk buying! Although they were on special at Sainsbury’s last week ...

Do you drink regularly but cut it out when you're being healthy?
