Insomnia - HELP
Discussion
Hi All,
Any help, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Background, I'm a fit healthy guy, just about to come in to middle age! For the last 15-20 years, I have suffered with a bout of insomnia every year or two, which usually lasts for between 7-14 days. The doctors don't do or give me anything and to be honest, I don't bother them anymore with it and just deal with it.
I think I must be getting 2 maybe 3 hours sleep at the moment. None of it is any good quality or deep sleep. I'm clock watching or twisting and turning in bed.
So right now, i'm on day 7, I feel like a zombie......I can't work, I can't drive, my eye sight is blurry, head is foggy and I'm even muddling up my words and slurring when talking. It is probably a little worse than normal and I did call the doctor.
Same reply, you'll get through it!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, any other sufferers out there?

Hey Grover,
Indeed, I'm a seasoned professional at making sure I do all the usual stuff. Some people I talk to seem to think it could be stress but I cannot think what stress it could be. All things are pretty good right now. My job could be classified as stressful but I think, I'm pretty good at switching off after a certain time.

While I wouldnt class it as insomnia, my Mrs is a poor sleeper. It generally takes her a long while to drop off to sleep and often has disturbed sleep.
For the past week though she has been sleeping with a 10kg weighted blanket and so far has slept really well each night and is definitely dropping off to sleep a lot quicker than she normally would.
Wether or not it would work the same for you? Im unsure, but it might be worth a try.

What's the problem, getting to sleep or staying asleep?
I suffer from the former and have realised that routine is very important to me. I go to bed at the same time every night. If I'm tired, I don't go to bed early - that just draws out the agony. I also make a point of not tossing and turning. If I'm not asleep within 30 minutes I get up, have a drink and read for an hour and then try again.

I can recommend HeadSpace or a sleeping app, that has an audio guide to clam controlled breathing and visualisation.
It puts the body and mind at ease and you just drop off to sleep in about 20mins, sometimes quicker, as i don't get to hear the end of the guide.

I used to listen to music to send me to sleep if I had a very late night. Didn't work.
Sex makes you sleep (afterwards! LOL).
These days I have far too many late nights (or is that mornings?) so that 'can't sleep well mode' has returned.
As you can see by the time I'm posting this I don't learn... up late again.
I'm gonna try this right now (did it years ago, as said didn't work) wonder if it will this time? Music.
Shut down the Mac, and get the earphones and plug in my i-phone...
40 yrs ago this year. Just Testing LP by Wishbone Ash.
The song is appropriately called ..

Hope I don't start singing it out loud... and the wife wakes up, she'll give me a clout and turn over!

Insomnia is horrible, it's ruined many days of my adult life over the past 45+ years but there are worse things you can get and it won't, in itself, kill you. Some people are naturally 'good' sleepers and can't understand what the fuss is about but others, like me, aren't.
For years, on and off, I resorted to medication like hypnotics (my then GP was happy to prescribe a limited amount of sleeping tablets eg zopiclone etc) or the Night Nurse trick but I found the 'sleep' they induced was phoney. I felt just as bad the following day but in a different way. Plus it was too easy to become psychologically dependent on them, ie although not physically addicted it was difficult to stop taking them because I knew I would then have bad nights and st days
The way I cope with it is to just accept it, 'trying' to get to sleep just makes it worse. There's an earlier thread on here called, I think, 'Sleep Meditations' which has some good tips including this

Hi OP here.
Well last night was much of the same.
Went in to bed at 11pm, my usual time and clock watched until 12.30. Then got up, drink of water, read a book for a while and tried to get to sleep at 1.30am.......it wasn't until 4.26am that I dropped off.
How do I know this....well I saw the clock at 2.13, 2.55,3.31, 4.26am and that was the last I remember.
I had to get up at 8 for a work conference call at 8.30, clearly not enough sleep.
Feel like crap again today.
Tonight I'm going out with a couple of friends and will be pretty merry (to put it politely) lets see if that works!
