Just wondered if anyone takes probiotic supplements to help with their gut/digestive health? I often have an upset stomach and wondered if a supplement would help.

I think the latest studies that have come out on probiotics have shown they don’t actually do anything beneficial and in fact could be worse for your natural gut flora/microbes.

It had been argued they are especially good after a course of antibiotics, which would wipe out a large portion of you good gut bacteria. However that appears to have been overstated.

I recall a tv show doing tests on various products and most didn't make it to the gut .

Thread resurrection alert

I am at an age were i am taking 3 prescription drugs on a daily basis - Perindopril, Xarelto, and Tamsulosin. A side effect of two of them is Diarrhoea. For several years i seem to have been going through a fortnightly cycle of being constipated, followed by diarrhoea. My GP seems unconcerned - its inconvenient, rather than life threatening. I have a healthy diet with plenty of fibre, water and not too much meat. I exercise daily.

A couple of weeks ago I bought some Physis Advanced Probiotics and my toiletry problems seems to be solved, at a stroke. I do not intend taking them for more than 3-weeks, but would recommend them to anyone with similar problems, IBS etc. The article posted above is not an easy read, but only really discusses post antibiotic use.

It will be interesting to see what happens when i do stop taking them.

Even if you take them and they do nothing, if you think they do something they may have a better effect as a placebo.

Gut health is massively correlated to state of mind.

Isn't it the other way around? The balance of your gut flora affects your state of mind, driven by the food you eat and whether your body can absorb nutrients for example? E-coli in the gut seems to be a major influence on feelings of wellbeing (at least from what I recall).

Perhaps you could experiment with apple cider vinegar - that's got a number of beneficial compounds in it, as well as the ability to fully break down your food and increase bioavailability of the nutrients.

I think it's a great thing to have around in cases of stomach upset and indigestion.

Well it’s a two way street I assume.

Stress can reduce the efficacy of your gut lining which then impacts nutrient absorption.

Either way there is plenty to focus on alongside probiotic supplements.

This modern world of working lunches and grabbing a bite to eat on the run, and ‘fast food’ are all just a big no no for a healthy life, before you go supplementing.

Another one for apple cider vinegar, one of the best things you can do for your gut, state of mind also has a huge bearing too.

Where do you get Apple Cider Vinegar?

Seems a bit like a good quality supplement with little downside concern.
No cows milk based products and no yeasts unlike most stuff you’d be given for gut health.

Most health food shops, make sure it contains The Mother, that's the cloudy stuff sat at the bottom.

This is good advice. Here is some more:

Mix your ACV with sparkling water and it's a bit like drinking cider.

Sticks.

Interesting. I used to take probiotics for IBS, but when I spoke to the consultant she said they normally recommend it for constipation. So now I take pshyllium capsule(s) which helps establish normal digestive cycles with insoluble fibre. For some people though, fibre makes it worse.

If you don't like the taste of apple cider vinegar, you can get it as tablets. Some come with added pectin, which is supposed to soften gall stones.

Some people would rather guide their dad into their mum than take apple cider vinegar, so Gummie sweets are a very good alternative

I think Aldi do it:

https://www.aldi.co.uk/organic-raw-apple-cider-vin...

You can get it from health food places in a 5l container which is better value at about £15-£20.
