This has been going on for some time now, and I've already been to my GP who was basically useless, refused to give me an allergy test and I'm just none the wiser.

What happens in, seemingly at complete random, I'll wake up on a morning, and my nose, inside, will be "tickly" and I can feel swellings inside my nostrils. What happens after that is pretty much like clockwork. I'll usually have an itchy throat and sometimes rashes on my hands too.

Eventually, I'll start sneezing, and I literally will sneeze all day, with the tickling feeling in my nose intensifying as the day goes on.

Some hours after it starts, my nose will start running, almost like water coming out of my nose, and at times, it will almost flow out my nose uncontrollably.

This eventually gives way to my nose just blocking up entirely (like my passages are swollen) and I am unable to breathe through my nose. I can somewhat counter this effect by inhaling Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, but whilst this clears my nose, it generally causes another bout of sneezing.

The sneezing which goes on throughout the entire day until I go to bed, gets more intense and more painful - at times it hurts my entire body.

I cannot begin to describe how debilitating this is. It may not sound that bad, but it makes me ill, flu like symptoms, fever, extreme tiredness, though oddly, it seems to increase my appetite confused

I'll go to bed on a night and wake up and it'll all be gone, save for some congestion, a sore throat (from mouth breathing) and sore dry skin where it dried my skin out.

I've tried antihistamines, both oral and nasal, decongestants, anti-inflammatories and literally nothing does anything other than the Oxy Hydrochloride as mentioned above. I've also tried a neti-pot (I bought one ages ago to try and help with this) and while it gives temporary relief, it comes back pretty sharpish.

This occurs almost every week / fortnight and leaves me ill for a whole day, and then another half a week to recover.

I did associate lack of sleep and alcohol with it, but last night I had no alcohol and a good nights sleep and it still got me today.

Anyone else get this, or does anyone know what it could be? I've googled, and found other people with the same symptoms but seemingly no solutions.

I had hay-fever one year - never before or since and it was sh*t, allergies come and go. I am very allergic to some cats though, I end up having a shower, sniff water up your nose and blow it out several times, wear new clothes and put the other ones out of the way then wash your hands after touching them then see what happens. If you still turn into a snot ball then it is probably something in your environment!

I had something similar although not as bad as what you've described. My doctor said it was just some kind of rhinitis and to take antihistamines. I've had hayfever since childhood so I've always had antihistamines in the house and they seemed to do the job. I would suggest trying different antihistamines, Loratadine works really well for me but the other type don't seem to do anything.

Mine did seem to get better on its own but it did take a while so hopefully you just need to get through it.

wake up sometimes with golf balls under my eyes they are so swollen, looks like I have had a major accident. Usually disappears after 3-4 days. Occurs maybe once a year but at any period /season.

I have been taking a nasal spray which seemed to work for a while but it's not really working any more, so I've stopped.

It hasn't been too bad since, but the difference is I try and get at least 30 minutes of cardio outside per day, and this seems to keep it at bay or at least reduce the severity of it... for now.

I spoke too soon, its kicked off again today frown

Sneezing, snotty, blocked nose, feeling lethargic, and I know this day is write off already.

The only thing I can think that would have triggered it is due to my GFs shift changing, so I probably only got 7 hours sleep last night, but generally this wouldn't affect 99% of population.

Its getting really boring now, and it's just so annoying that I can't figure out what's causing it, so that I can treat it.

I've probably got aids. Bad aids.

I've always had hayfever, not too extreme and I'd never bothered to work out if it was anything specific I was allergic to (cats always get me though, the swines).

But a few years ago I moved house, and it got much, much worse, always from March to July only. Then the penny dropped. The new house was surrounded by very tall trees, which emit huge amounts of pollen. Two springs ago, when it didn't rain from January until about June, you could see the yellow pollen building up on our cars in the driveway. My system went in to melt down.

The antihistamine Loratadine keeps a lid on it (just), but nothing else works. If I forget to take a tablet in the morning, I'm sunk.

I feel your pain, but can only suggest trying every different kind of antihistamine you can lay hands on. And perhaps insist that your GP sends you for an allergy test. If he absolutely won't, file a complaint against him and go and pay for one privately.

That's the weird thing though, its not every day, this time there was 13 days between attacks. Even though I've been trying to keep an eye out for a pattern I just can't seem to find one.

I guess I'll just have to try the anti-histamines till I find one that works. Last time I went to the doctors they said there was "no point" in sending me for one, but I've since moved so would end up seeing a different doctor anyway.

I know I'm a bit late to the conversation but I have this exact same issue for years. Usually one day a month and sometimes several months in between. I've always wanted to know what my problem is but have never been able to figure it out. Did you ever get any info? Just curious.

Twenty five years ago all of a sudden aged 36 I developed an allergy that we found out a good number of years later was due to Asprin. I took an anti histomine tablet every day for maybe two years as even without exposure to Asprin I felt like you did. I weaned myself off the tablet but avoid Asprin. Sometimes it comes back at me, I suspect due to drinking out of a contaminated or not properly washed cup/glass.
I was told by my Doctor not to have the Allergy Tests as not only are they unreliable but they can triger nasty happenings.

You will eventually work out what's causing your allergy, just keep looking.

I get exactly the same thing, starts when I wake up and gets progressively worse as the day goes on. The next morning I am absolutely fine.

It is most certainly environmental, but I still have no clue what it is. Affects me every 6 months to a year.

I do have allergies, but none of my known ones affect me in that way.

it's weird...

Well chaps, its been pretty much business as usual with this. Except it now takes me longer to recover, maybe 3 or 4 days now, but if anything, it has become slightly less frequent.

However, it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks or months. I've moved out of our flat, and while we were busy packing stuff up, it became apparent that the place was pretty dirty to put it mildly. We aren't naturally dirty people but because the place was so small, with so much clutter it was nigh on impossible to clean properly without actually emptying the place first to clean it, so it just never got done. We're talking about dirt in places we couldn't see or reach easily... most of what we could see was kept clean.

I'm the first to admit it doesn't paint a great picture, but we actually thought it smelled "mouldy" for want of a better phrase, not something we ever noticed until we started packing stuff up.

While I was packing stuff up I got the classic symptoms, except worse, and it came with a bad chest too, which I am still slowly recovering from a week on.

The new place is so much bigger and far less cluttered and is going to be so much easier to keep clean, so it will be interesting to see if that had any bearing on it.

Dust allergy perhaps?

I get massive sneezing fits when I tidy the house because of all the hidden dust. Like you I have a small house with lots of stuff so dust accumulates in hidden places. sometimes I get itchy eye's but an antihistomine usually sorts it out.

As for the tickly nose, I get this but it is nothing to do with allergies. TMI moment incoming: In my case it is caused by my nose hairs. Occasionally I will get a really thick one that has a curl in it and it rubs against the inside of my nose. Or I will get a really long one that tickles the opposite side. I now have to do a weekly check up there and pluck anything that is too long, dark or curling. Clippers don't work either, when they curl over they press themselves to the inside of my nostril.

Could be. Will be interesting to see if my symptoms improve. Interestingly I don't remember having this problem at home with my parents many years ago because that place was kept clean, but that said, my dad does suffer similar issues and as said their house isn't dirty.

Once we had started packing up and moving out, it became apparent that the dust / dirt problem was far worse than we had ever imagined.

5 years since I posted this, and I STILL have not got to the bottom of it. Moving house did not help.

Started again last night, I was literally sitting there watching TV, when I felt my nose start to tickle. At that very moment, I knew what sort of day it was going to be today.

I'm now at a complete loss what is causing this, or how I can treat it - I've tried all sorts of antihistamines, nasal sprays, neti pots, you name it, I've probably tried it.

I'm now at the stage where I feel I'll probably just have to live with this for the rest of my life, which is a depressing thought. I've literally just shifted a cold, and now I have this. I'll not be right again for the rest of the week.

I've even just been told at work that I'm famous for my sneezing, coughing and spluttering now. What a thing to be known by. rolleyes

I get this as well
ive put it down to being of an age where my nose hair growing abilities are second to none,
and the whiskers are irritating the inside of my nose, hence the uncontrolled sneezing

Get one of those fuzzaway trimmer type things, thatll help

also i think not enough sleep has something to do with it.

i haven't ever done drugs but the cartridge in my nose is not straight infact my nose looks normal but itll only bend one way and not the other.
it just wont budge at all in one direction yet will bend right over in the other, so i put it down to that

I'm giving the steroid nasal sprays another try. They didn't completely fix me last time, but tbh as long as they take the edge off, that will be better than nothing.

I've had a couple of broken noses in my time so that probably doesn't help.

My nostrils are more like piss holes in the snow than nostrils, so I often struggle to breathe through my nose, giving me that lovely mouth breather look everyone takes the piss out of hehe as such I doubt I could get anything in there to trim my nose hair!

SinrOne, I have had some success using Beconase nasal spray daily for many months, but giving up red wine has had the biggest difference.

That said I’ve had my first bout this week in many months, but I have just been on a stag do and then a festival, sleeping in a field. It does seem to be worse when alcohol / lack of sleep / pollen is involved.
