Toddler Stutter

Hello all,
Bit of a strange one this, but over crimbo our little boy of 2 1/2 has developed a stutter.
We thought it might have been due to the excitement of crimbo/presents/big family gatherings, etc, but we've been back at home for over 2 days now and it's still there...
To give you an idea, if you think back to the film, 'A Fish Called Wanda', (bit of a blast from the past I know), he sounds just like Michael Palin in it...
Obviously we will be going the quack about it if it persists, but I was just curious if this is a common thing that toddlers, 'do', and he'll grow out of it, or whether he'll need some speech therapy, etc...

His speech really has been coming on in leaps and bounds recently, so perhaps he's just hit a bit of a plateau, and can't quite keep up with his own development at the moment...
We'll look into contacting a local SLT and see how things go.

My boy has this also and started about the same time. We have found by working with the SLT we can control it and bring him back down. Christmas is the worst time and this is normal as EVERYONE is so excited that to get a word in edgeways he will feel he has to start first and butt in. According to our SLT even tho my boys is quite bad the fact that it peaks and troughs and also the fact that we can make it "better" by being patient and letting him take his time indicates that he will overcome it.
Its a LOT more common for boys to carry this on a bit but they dont consider it a major issue unless you can not influence it or till its been out of control for a few months.
Basically what I am saying is ... watch him and see if come mid January it gets better. If not get in touch with SLT who will teach you techniques to put him back in the correct course.
Interestingly our boy is quite bumpy at the moment but we are less worried, as we are expecting when he goes back to school it will dissapear again as it did last year, this is due to the fact he doesnt have the pressure of keeping up with adults in his conversation.
Whatever happens, go easy on the little chap, (which I know you will do) he’s only trying to make himself heard. My parents’ efforts on this 43 years ago, I was at the same age, amounted to the sum total of sweet FA. It took 25 years (late 20’s) before I was happy that I had it under control. School could be a nightmare at times.

Thanks again for your feedback. We'll certainly watch him closely and see if it eases with the crimbo come-down...
It's also comforting to know we're not alone, it was just a shock as it came out of nowhere...
Don't worry Nigel, of course I'll go easy on him! He's my little buddy and I just want to help him. It breaks my heart seeing him struggling with it, especially as his vocabulary and sentence forming has improved so much recently...
We'll do whatever it takes to help him...
