I had root canal done a while ago and had a huge temporary filling put in prior to getting a crown. I've just lost it eating the devils food (cadbury's eclairs) but am on holiday 5000 miles away from my dentist.

10 days until I can get back and see him - am I going to die horribly from tooth ache or will I be ok? Can any dentists suggest what to do to best deal with it?

For your root filling to have a successful outcome it needs to have a good seal over the top of it. Otherwise the canals will get re-infected.
You need to have the hole filled as best as you can til seeing your dentist is possible.
There are kits you can buy from the chemist in some places that will help patch you up.
However, the help of a dentist will only increase the liklihood of a good seal being placed.
