Hi all

A&E and an x-ray have confirmed a fracture in my 11 year old son's little finger this evening. It's been taped to his ring finger and arm raised/held in a sling to help the swelling go down.

We are to return to the fracture clinic tomorrow morning and whilst my initial thoughts are they'll just tape the two together to repair naturally (as they did with his little toe when he broke that!) I'm wondering if it's likely to be something more, like a cast?

The swelling and lovely purple/black bruisng is mainly underneath in the middle - one knuckle joint to the other and slightly beyond. The Consultant mentioned de-something (I didn't catch the word) and indicated bent with his hands if that helps!

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Splinted to the adjacent finger is the norm, unless you break the cup where he finger meets the knuckle in which case they sometimes pin it. I have two cup breaks on my right hand without pins and apart from the extended range of movement and arthritis pain sometimes I'm fine without pins.

Thanks hman.

Been back this morning and just a splint thankfully. He's got a buckle fracture on the growth plate. Explains the bent bit the doc demonstrated last night.

That's how nephew did his. This was through a mis-catch of a ball that bent it during PE and he still carried on playing.
