I'm sure this one will provoke some interesting debate.

I was pondering this on the walk home from the station tonight (after catching up on the "what training" thread while on the train hehe )

So, my first thoughts were pull / chin ups, (or muscle ups) as they are some of the most simple movements you can do, yet they require real functional strength to perform properly.

In what respect? IMO there are no definiative strenght indicators except at a personal level.

For instance I am powerfully built (like 911), but on a bodyweight as a % - I expect shorter guys would trounce me (lift more as a percentage).

For for amounts there a guys much larger than me who could lift significantly more.

So. What you need is the triathlon equivalent incorporating % body mass against weight lifted

Depends what muscles you want to challenge. Pull ups and chin ups require different muscles. Muscle ups are only done by Chuck Norris.

I suppose upon reflection that it's quite a subjective issue...

Squat, deadlift or Clean and press. Body weight will need to be taken into account but if you factor that in then these are good indicators of full body strength IMO.

Yeah but then they're too weak to do campus boarding and would be beaten by a girl...

Only a beast could do a front lever pull up, for instance...

It's like the old "how fit are you?" question, really.

Ah... but if you're really muscley nowadays, you'll probably struggle if you haven't been working the fingers much compared to the amount you now weigh. I wouldn't recommend trying just to prove a point as you could pop a ligament.

If you can do a front lever, I demand the custard test!!

Apologies for chopping you up...
Have you ever done muscle-ups?
They are neither simple nor easy. If you have sufficient strength, there is then a great deal of technique involved.

If we're to use them as a measure of strength, I am a kitten.

I popped a ligament last year doing 1 finger (each hand) pullups- won't be making that mistake again! didn't account for an increase in weight.... Grip is better but crimping strength may well not be.

I'll have a go at the front lever pull up on my bar this evening or tommorrow in the gym it doesn't look too bad.... If I can do it i'll put a vid up. smile

Its a non-question. Like asking "who's most clever"

Someone with long arms wont do the chins a short stubby guy will.....but ask stubby guy to pick up a weight 5ft of the ground and he'll need a ladder.

I think Didely has already covered the 3 main ones. Compound exercises which use as many muscle groups as possible are probably the best indicator of overall strength (as opposed to something like bench). My vote would go for Deads or Clean and Press

Hehe Not good! Yeah, I should imagine grip strength is good because you're holding heavy weights but as you know, the ability to crimp is down to ligaments in the fingers as well as the muscles in the forearm.

Re front lever, if you've never done it before, I will be surprised if you can (1) get horizontal (2) not pop your back trying. Be careful.

In all seriousness though, his videos show some serious strength. He does things i cant even contemplate. Has anyone ever tried the pull up then push up to lock the arms, like he is doing at approx 50secs. I have, seems impossible!

It's certainly impressive. I need to find somewhere that I can have a go at doing that.

Can't see the youtube vids, but levers and that other Olympic ring stuff is pretty intense, add to that the three powerlifts and the two Olympic lifts, and the strongman events, and what have you got?biggrin
I myself am 911 built but on Saturday night could not beat my mate sat at a bench at a game of mercy. He is a scrawny fella, I have also been beaten by a workmate with the build of a scarecrow in mercy. My mate say's two hours of guitar practise was the reason. he challenged me expecting to win, but it was just a stalemate for several minutes.

Oh, right.

From now on, if I post a video of very muscley men, I'm going to drop a Julian Clarey-style comment by way of introduction if I remember. biggrin
