Prescripton Sunglasses - My Experience

So I thought I'd share my experience of purchasing some prescription sunglasses in case anyone was debating it!
Not an advertising ploy, just my experience from me to you:
I'm not very good with contacts, especially on holiday. Prescription sunglasses seemed the way forward. I've always been fond of ray bans, aviators especially. So my quest began to see if I could get hold of these!
The likes of optical express and boots, were extremely over priced and every single thing other than a frame was an extra! Surprised they allowed you to collect them for free! Other websites offered styles you couldn’t try on so designer was essential. The traditional ray ban aviators offered everything I wanted so I pinged a couple of emails off and awaited response. I always recommend to try and ring the company you are intending on purchasing from as a few didn’t respond for a few days and couldn’t get hold of them on the phone! TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!
I ended up finding a company called fashion4eyes who seemed extremely helpful and upon ringing they told me everything I needed to know. Selected prescription lenses and that was the only option extra. ORDER was placed! (24th June 2011)
Since then I received numerous emails conveying the stage the glasses were at. 5 working days later they were DISPATCHED! Received on 2nd July 2011
Upon opening the box you could immediately tell they were the business! Glasses in the ray ban case with cleaning cloth and free tool kit, they were Superb!
Vision is absolutely outstanding and couldn't take them off the whole day at Goodwood! Must day I'd recommend them any day.

Thanks for posting up your experience, sounds like you're very happy with them. Can I ask what the total cost was - understand it you prefer not to say for whatever reason. I've always assumed that as you experienced with boots etc the basic price is bumped up by a shopping list length of extras (non scratch coating, thinner lenses, anti glare etc etc) which you need to make the glasses useful.
I love mine - used to have a pair of Oakley Juliets, which I loved, but my left eye is just outside the range for Oakley to do prescription.
Optician (Vision Express) was very helpful - unfortunately for me, I was limited in what I could choose due to said knackered left eye (astigmatism) - had to be a fairly flat lens to work, or a normal pair of glasses with tinted lenses (or the adjustable tint ones) but anyone who wears those is a murderer - so a lot of things were out. Aviators were not, so picked up a pair of the new carbon fiber legged ones with prescription polarized lenses (unfortunately I could not get thin and polarized, so the left lens does look a bit funny from certain angles in certain lights) - can't remember how much, but around 200 notes I think.
Only things that annoy me - the lenses don't have Ray-Ban on them, so they do look a bit fake (shallow, I know) and I forgot to ask to keep the original lenses, so when I finally decide to get laser eyes fitted (this year hopefully) I am stuck with a pair of glasses I can't use, or have to shell out for something I should have got for free in the first place.

Try adding an astigmatism and varifocals to that and you may find it's a whole lot more. In fact, I'll check this afternoon as I am having my eyes tested again in an hour or so.And they were £109.05 incl VAT

I'm also limited to the curve which the lenses can have. That takes quite a lot of sunglasses out of consideration.
Did a deal with Boots yesterday to get prescrption specs, and sunglasses, both varifocal for £250.00.
Not a 'named' frame, but nice enough, and over the last 50 years I've put enough in the pockets of the designers! Last 2 pairs were about £600.00.

Optician. My sunglasses are Mau Jim with all the bells and whistles and the proper price is £580 or something. He let me have them for cost price. £300. So he would make £280 profit!
No wonder he drives an M5!

Since I had my eyes done there nearly four years ago I have bought two pairs of plain RayBans - one black, one brown - and a pair of fancy work specs with variable long sight correction. End of. And saved a bloody fortune too.
Varifocals are indeed available as sunglasses. Reactolite are already sunglasses and are also available as varifocals.
I was told a year or so ago that laser surgery has moved on to such an extent that my eyes can now been zapped......of course, she said, you'll still need to wear glasses! WTF I thought.

For long sighted folks there really isn't much point in the zapping as unlike short sighted people we're not "blind" without our specs on (I'm +4.75 but often don't wear them while doing stuff) so if we had surgery we'd just be like "Oh right, cheers" afterwards as it wouldn't be such a revelation as it is with people who can't see a bus 10 feet in front of them!rlw said:

Seriously debating it but can't get it done for at least a few years due to my age 
Glad everyone's had good experiences also! Nice to know there are some decent companies out there!
Main reason I went designer was because I wanted to be able to try them on before I ordered online.

They wouldn't touch me with a bargepole! I honestly quite like my specs, anyway...I have prescription sunglasses.
Bought from Tesco opticians of all places, there was an offer on the frames when I bought my last ordinary pair. They're polarised brown, and are the best sunglasses I've had to date.
Cost was maybe £60 or £70 all in, for the frames, lenses, and polarisation.
