I thought they sounded like a realyl good simple idea until I got one.

I discovered that there doesn't really seem to be any easy way of getting receipts - I need them for my expenses but there is no way of getting them.

I registered online against my better judgement but it still doesn't show me anything other than my current balance.

I was then told that if I topped up online it should work. I can't see why that would make any difference to why I can see my journeys in an online statement, but there it is.

Tried it just now with an "auto top up" thing - but it says I have to "activate" it within 8 days. IE, I have to use it within 8 days or God knows what happens to it. I don't use pubic(sic) transport that often and I might not use it in that time, so I decided just to do a one off top up.

Only for it to give me the same 8 day bull! Also, in both cases I have to nominate my home station - no bloody use as there are 2 stations I use depending on where I'm going!!

Is the system really this crap or am I just being retarded?

At the moment it seems like I really have no option than to bin the card and just use travelcards. I know I won't get overcharged, my money won't "expire", and I'll have a receipt when the taxman comes calling.

I can't be the only person this confused can I?

Mods, please don't move this to Finance, London, or some other God forsaken section that nobody reads like my last Oyster thread...

You can get receipts at the machines.

The online thing is handy at times but if you're at the station to travel it only takes 30 seconds to top up.

Wont that be be a receipt for the top up not for each journey as the employer is likely to require ?

the amount is £90ish for a month of charges zone 1 & 2.

A day is £4.60, so per week is £23 so per month (4.2 as not every month is equal is £96ish), and you get weekends for free.

Or you could go for every single journey if you want to be anal??

I know what you mean - my accountant advises against using pre-pay because it's harder to track the business/pleasure usage.
I guess you can still get paper tickets for accounting/expense purposes but compared to the convenience of the oyster it is a hassle.

I used to do the top up and get a reciept for when ever it was 5/10/etc and got bored and talked with my accountant and then he said it was fine for the monthly one.

I don't use the train daily - it's the occasional journey so I never use travelcards (other than daily ones).

I require a receipt per journey - not a question of being anal.

I used to do a few business journeys (4-6 per week) on mine and as I was using 2 singles for my commute i'd submit the odd £10 oyster receipt in proportion to the breakdown. This was 'rejected' as it needed to be per journey. Decided they could screw themselves and so I just buy paper singles instead.

On line statements available - you can check your usage and use a copy as a receipt

But then what you paid for and what the value of the trip is might be different where there is a daily zone cap. Fraud?

As said, it tells me nothing online. I have tried to set it to auto top up (why this should make a difference to why o can see my journey history I have no idea) but I need to promise I am going to use it in tje next 8 days and at which station...

Thanks for moving it again mods. It's a general question about how oyster works that would get more coverage in the lounge, like my last one. This is a good example of why a million forums doesn't work. Please would you move it back?

If you log in, go to "My card" and then "Journey history" it shows you all the dates, times, locations and fares. I print this off and highlight the work related journeys in order to claim my expenses.

It is a pain - I've never worked out how to do it either.
