What is this i found 2?

unfortunately i've got no pics as my cameras fooked but was cleaning out my dads pond (one of those half oak barrel affairs) and found this thing which was about the same colour as the thing in the "What is this i found" thread. looked exactly like a maggot only it had a thin tail about the same length as it's body.
it wriggled, but very inefficiently so not sure wether it lives in water or not.
any ideas??

ay thas the one. i'll be sure to go out and kill all the little bds in the morning

They seem to do much more good than harm. Preying upon pests and stopping some diseases. Mother Theresa has(/had) nothing on maggoty-tail here.

GO Syrphid Flies!!!

I'd let the metamorphosis happen and let them fly off.

or of course you could just pour them down the drain!
