What protection do I have when purchasing an item from a relatively unknown seller through PayPal? If he doesn't send the item, can I get a refund through PayPal? If not can I initiate a chargeback through my credit card company for the payment?

I'm slightly afraid that the seller could just not post the items and I'd be screwed, and would love to hear stories good or otherwise about others that have done similar things!

I've bought a fair few things off Ebay via Paypal. You have the same protection, it's just you have to do a lot more to send the money XD you need their email address, type in the amount you're sending (including the postage), click "Goods" rather than "Ebay" and then it leads you to a confirmation page, double check it all, then hit send.

If it does go wrong you can still claim the money back, you just won't be able to leave them feedback on Ebay or anything to show others that the transaction went wrong.

It would be useful if you had any actual experience of what I said.

Have you sent money for goods not on ebay that you haven't received and then subsequently had problems? Or are you just the guy in the pub who has heard they're ste?

I have heard they're ste too, but generally favour the buyer on ebay, so was wondering whether it would be the same with non-ebay transactions.

1) We can't know any better than you how trustworthy the seller is.

2) Why not ask Paypal instead of us?

whats wrong with using that thing called a bank and doing a bill transfer?

you know that thing were they transfer money over the phone?

Or just use a shower of ste that is paypal and after mine and my mates dealing with ebay and them I would never use them in any other way when a bank can do the banking related things and not a pretend banking company.

I've used PayPal for both sending and receiving money for something - It's not something I'd bother with in the future, but it is/was convenient.

There's a trust issue really as it's like me sending you money through PayPal and then you sending me an item out to me - or "forgetting".

I think there's a whole burden of proof of whether you're paying for anything at all - at least with eBay, you win an item and get a PayPal type invoice. Outside of ebay, well, you're in trust territory really.

1. I didn't ask 'will he send the goods' I asked how PayPal would treat the transaction - the same as an ebay sale - or different?

2. I know what PayPal say but I am interested in hearing people's personal experience, as terms and conditions can be interpreted in a number of ways.

Some people prefer the other party not to have their bank details.

Thanks

But if I do a bank transfer surely I would have even less standing if I didn't receive goods and tried to claim it back? At least with PayPal I'm using a credit card and so could have a chance to claim it back (I think)

At the expense of a mildly ridiculous question - Have you actually asked PayPal?

Indeed I have, am still waiting for a reply. I've gone through their terms and conditions too, but I would value personal experience higher than either PayPal's response or reading their terms and conditions, hence the topic.

Pah, crazy talk. Besides much better to debate on a forum... when I say debate I really just mean try and convince the OP how st PayPal are.

They are st by the way and if things go tits up simply don't care. I think you would be better covered by a straight bank transfer.

I can say tits!

Yes - you will be covered.
The seller must send the loot recorded delivery. In the event of a dispute, PayPal will ask the seller for proof of posting. If he can't provide this you will be refunded - no if's no but's.

If the loot arrives and it isn't to your satisfaction, PayPal will tell you to return the item recorded delivery - you will have to provide the tracking number. They will monitor the delivery, and once it's signed for they will refund you.

As a buyer, you are very well covered. As a seller you're left very exposed to fraud.

Yes - you are covered for 'goods which are not delivered'.......

Paypal FAQ

Not the same as the level of e-bay cover but it is still some cover. You can also pay through Paypal via credit card for extra protection - however some credit card companies regard Paypal as a cash transaction which means you don't get their purchase protection cover so worth checking first.

You can protect yourself as a seller by taking the money out of your Paypal account straight away and transferring it to your bank account.

If the buyer tries to do you then I think that they're stuffed, as PayPal can't take money out of your bank account or debit your credit card.

If that's wrong I'd be interested to know.

Hell, if it's right I'd also be interested to know.

st, if this is in the correct forum as well I'd be ecstatic.

I got a bit excited there for a minute - please don't Park Ferme me again, I'll be good - honest.

If a dispute goes against you (or is even opened), Paypal will register a debit against your account - the third party gets their money back. I'm not sure as to the exetents that Paypal will go to with respects to chasing the money owed though.

Luckily the OP is buying not selling.
