Divided you fall...

Is this the new HM way of thinking?

Granted from what those who have been in the know have said, general quality of the P&P had suffered over recent months. I for one was shocked that the forum needed a sticky warning against inflammatory posts, although I personally hadn't noticed this, I concede it may have been necessary.
I know this topic has been done to death, and there have been a few high profile disagreements along the way, but as a voice of one, I would like to highlight that is simply not working!
The regular posts (TFND+LT thread) for one, have been a casualty, and many topics that would have attracted a casual aside simply get moved to the sidelines, and miss the breadth of comment that made the P&P an insight into the general public feeling.
Mods, we know you have a fairly thankless task, and I for one have found myself on the wrong side of what is acceptable at times when offering a comement, but the powers that be have made a reasonably decent fist of things. Surely now is about time to consider that the very thing that made the P&P great in the first place, and the thing that that gave it longevity to succeed, ie, its contemporaneous coverage of all things, has been lost in your new fangled change?
For me, the new change has signed the death knell in the institute I knew as the P&P. and I am well aware that in the grand scale of things, at thirty odd months, I am a "newbie", but there are many more venerable, and newer memebers of this forum that I feel would agree with the sentiments.......

Think of the children!

ETA: to appease the spelling nazi's, Vin rouge is never the greatest aide in sp+p.

Originally I really disliked it and found it a PITA to navigate, but now I quite like the new system, it's removed a sizeable chunk of the bullst. It's a shame that some of the frequent threads have suffered but that's a price worth paying IMO, this is meant to be a car forum after all, the P&P was supposed to be subordinate.

Fair point. but to the best of my knowledge the link to the P&P took up no more room than the link to any other area of interest?

PH is a commercial site and the owners, quite rightly, want to make a profit.

I've noticed some targeted advertising, which is probably the main driver. For example FlyBe (SP) is being advertised in the 'holidays & travel' forum. That's the way of the world. If the user-traffic reduces so will the advertising revenue and PH towers, I'm sure, will revert back to the old style site - or make certain changes to attract more hits.

My penny's worth! Personally, doesn't really bother me!

Right hang on.

I was (and still am) against the split up of the P+P.

However - there is now an easy way around it. Go to Gassing Station and click on P+P (the column header). You then get all the threads listed in all P+P sub fora. Not quite the same - but pretty good. I only found out yesterday and it's alright you know. Give it a try. I think the more people start using it that way the more we will get the eclectic responses back.

Most people don't read stickies or Website Feedback so I think people are still unaware. It has made it a hell of a lot better, though some of the threads moved and their subsequent location can be baffling.

The best thing to do is to select the forums which you're interested in then click on 'what's new'.

Yeah the post in webste feedback has been up since Monday or something, but I only clocked it yesterday. Why it hasn't been made common knowledge is anybody's guess...

I disagree because that's always been an option. If you want all new P&P threads then when you click on the heading you get them. I particularly like this because quite a few of the forums would not be in my favourites but end up with threads in them I want to read.

Oh bugger, this sticky http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... has been at the top of this forum for a while now, I thought most had seen it.

One of the changes makes P&P very easy to use.

Garlick has it stickied in this very forum after I mentioned on the original it wouldn't get read. People don't read stickies either unfortunately.

I don't disagree with what you are saying guys, and in many ways, perhaps I am falling foul of the "old guard" mentality I have historically disliked about pistonheads. I can see that there are ways to highlight the things that you are interested in, and in that way weed out the chaff. As mentioned above however, I feel eclectically the forum has suffered, and that is a shame....

I agree completely but the change they have made has made it better than it was.

I disagree. This is not the same at all. You see to get one new thread from each sub forum, non?
To be honest, all I really want is the real reasons behind the change, if it's for the targeted advertising then so be it, but at least we'll know. A bit of honesty goes a long way. This is by far my favourite forum on t'internet so I care that it works well and people use it.

It's bizarre isn't it. I have just carried out a detailed useability study on a website I manage and the stickies are ignored - as are the advertising banners. Nothing worse than entering a forum and finding the top half (forehead) of the forum is a list of rules and stickes. Dullsvile. It's almost a deliberate ignore..... like assembly instructions. I would not have known about this had it not been mentioned in a thread.
