Prompted by the 'legendary guns' thread...

Does such a thing as a 'shotpistol' exist? A handgun - pistol (or revolver) that fires shotgun cartridges?

If not, why not?

I would have thought they would be great close-quarters self-defence weapons.

Like a purpose made sawn off?

There is the Taurus Judge, not a pistol but a revolver.

Not sure if there are any others. The next closest thing would probably be a flare pistol?

It is also possible to buy metallic cases with shot.

I had some 22LR with 20 shot, not something I would use on anything bigger than a butterfly.

From that article :
A number four shot load followed by four hollowpoints might be just about ideal for social work.
Meaning to keep car-jackers and the like under control.....yikes
btt :
Alan Bourdillion Traherne (aka "Mississippi") from the "El Dorado" movie had something.....

Howdah pistols are kind of along the same lines, they are usually smooth bored and look a bit like a sawn off shotgun, but instead of firing shot they usually fired a solid (but massive) projectile, designed for taking down things like lions and tigers at very close range. (ie if you missed with your rifle while hunting and now had a very angry tiger heading your way at speed, you whip this out and blow it to smithereens just before it bites your head off.)

Would probably be fairly imposing for two legged predators staring down the barrels as well.

and also this....
I also tried some number 4 shot at closer range, and it is with larger shot such as this that The Judge becomes better suited for solving social disputes of the most unfriendly kind. I see this as an ideal weapon to keep on the car seat to quickly resolve an attempted car-jacking. When a punk jerks the car door open, a face full of number four shot should rapidly dissuade the social misfit from wanting anything to do with your car, and should also render him unable to pass the eye exam for a driver’s license for the rest of his miserable life. If this seems cruel, so be it. If someone sneaks into a parking lot and hot-wires a car, that is one thing, but if he tries to forcibly take an occupied vehicle at a traffic light, he can learn to read Braille in prison as far as I’m concerned.

You wouldn't want to jump into the wrong car in his supermarket carpark !yikes

The first one is a shotgun, what you have posted is a Barret rifle 50 cal???

As for the tiger gun, its used for when your riding on elephants and a tiger climbs up the face of an elephant, only for you to shoot it in the face and kill it dead, before it mauls you, although I am sure it breaks your wrist after the first shot

Could always use this pistol instead
