An address book style metal binding from the eighties where A-Z was listed down the right hand side. There was a little slider that you moved to the appropriate initial of the person you wanted, and then you pressed a button and the previous layers raised. This left you with the right initial, and subsquent index to other people.....

This could be me, but I'm sure I remember one of these...

Thanks all

indeed. And a video game called "I spy" that I used to play at the sad "video arcades| ... do such places still exist?

Yeah the one we had was endowed with a slightly too-powerful spring... so the whole thing practically popped off the table when you pressed it.

Quite fun

That was sort of it. The one I want has much more of a Terry and June brown plastic effect tho

I got one of those off my Gran when I was about 10, only it was a rather fancy gold coloured pocket one... what she expected a 10 year old to do with it I'll never know, think it's still kicking around somewhere too.

Yes, my parents had one of those. After about 1 week it would start to refuse to lift up at the correct page and it would just randomly select which letter it would open at....... Then pages would fall down from that as well..

We still have one but you don't have a slider. There are buttons for each letter range - A to C, D to F etc.

We did have a slider one also.

It's the sort of thing one would expect to find on the desk of an accountant.
