Yeah, but then topics get moved out their 'appropriate' sub-forums and never looked at by anyone again.

Waste of time.

I think that is going to be the main problem.

I don't like treasure hunts so I am f***ed if I'm going to spend ages trying to find where a thread has been moved to.

If that were true, then no topic since the change would have had a single reply.

Except, it's not.

Carry on.

I think thats the idea....got a serious question about cameras or DIY or something put it in there instead of putting it here and getting several pages of pisstaking and no answers.

The lounge still seems to be full of new P&P style threads so I dont think we have 'lost' anything.

Agreed.

It's a vicious circle. Threads get moved to obscure sub-forums, people interested in topics don't bother posting on the assumption no-one else will either, end result = fewer posts/interesting topics.

My example I cited in Website Feedback of The Hospital on C4 last night is a classic. That topic would normally have been peppered in P&P, instead it has 17 posts since last night.

...put in the appropriate sub forums to be seen again when clicking on 'what's new' or 'my stuff'.
To be seen by everyone who has selected the sub-forums created from the old P&P.

If they can be arsed to navigate their way through a couple of pages of what's and not decide on the order of fora.

Ok, an exaggeration, I admit. But that is a naive slant on my post. Obviously with the amount of traffic in PH there will always be some posts per topic, but no-where near as many on topics that get moved to obscure places that otherwise would have been peppered in P&P.

My example of The Hospital - yes it was a TV programme but the content was more to do with society, drunks, the NHS etc. The sorts of topics members got passionate about - now it will slide very quickly down the TV and Films forum into the ether.

That's how I've always done it...! In the P&P you had to wade through a lot of drivel and couldn't decide subject order either...

If the 'what's new' list gets too long use the 'mark all as read' to reset or set your preferred page length to something longer/shorter to suit. HTH.

I was going to do a thread a few weeks ago about how people navigate around PH - glad I didn't now - I can see how 'forum clickers' are being frustrated by not being able to exactly replicate the P&P, which is probably causing frustration - but you can get it virtually the same except it'll be interspersed with your other topics of interest, which, probably being of a rarer variety, maybe isn't a bad thing?

Already was a photography sub-forum.

In principle, yes it avoids cluttering one forum. Like I said in website feedback, I don't mind the What's New function etc.

I just think the P&P has been chopped up too much - the cost being many interesting P&P style topics that have a now 'sub-fora' slant, will get chucked out the Lounge and ultimately disappear.

Yes, if a topic that end up in the 'Health' forum is of sufficent interest then people will follow it, but the beauty of P&P was that even if on the face of it you were not interested in a topic, you had all these on one page that you could just dip into and find that, actually, it was relevant and interesting to you.

I can't help thinking that the Lounge will end up like the old P&P, unless the mods are going to make a judgement call on every post in here?

You could similarly argue, that a thread in the P&P - unless popular (usually driven by derisory comments by the 'wags') - would be off the page within minutes.

I'd venture that genuinely interesting threads will actually invite more (constructive) replies than they would have ever got in the P&P, as they will be more visible, for longer, in the sub-forums.

The 'chatter' remains in the lounge - simple smile

Hi Andy,

I do not specifically have issue with the functionality. Yes, you can set up your favourite forums etc.

My issue is what the effect of this split will have on the 'content' you cite.

I am with Eric Mc in that I think the effect will be to lose the randomness of the P&P; that threads of interest to individuals (that may well have sparked debate/humour/other P&P qualities) will be lost in sub-fora that are not visited as much; and that ultimately 'The Lounge' will basically be where you go to discuss relationship advice!

as I said, I agree in principle with the idea but I think it has been taken too far.

I think if everyone adapts then things would be much the same, but it's obvious some are struggling with the change and to be honest I can see pluses and minuses on both sides of the fence, so I will probably do an Arthur Fonzarelli and 'sit on it'.

Or what should be labelled 'The Lions Den' - full of the PH old codger brigade, ready to spit rich1231 disdain at anyone who enters. wink
