I have sold an item on ebay - quite expensive about £1k.
When I set the auction up I set that I would pay postage as I knew it would be high value so wanted to make sure it was sent using Special Delivery.
Now the auction has finished the postage service offered is just tracked 24. Is this right? Is it protected upto the full value?
If no can I buy extra protection at the post office?

The issue is if I don't use ebay postage then it takes a lot longer to get paid out.

I have not sold much recently and always used "buyer pays" for postage so never crossed my mind re the value.

Even though you selected buyer pays presume you are locked into their simple delivery?

You could ignore this, just write off the cost. (Download the label first to get the address) and use any service you require.

The downside to this is eBay will never know it's "delivered" or update that status. I wouldn't do that myself.

Sounds like it's a call to eBay customer services to ask the question.

Assuming it is simple delivery...have you read to T & C to see what the insured value is?

For a grand, I'd be hand delivering it and videoing the process.

It must be worth enough for you to want to sell it, and so, be a loss to have shenanigans.

Its not clear, IMO.

I think I might just have to bite the bullet and pay for special and hope the pay out is cleared tomorrow.

I’m sure eBay simple delivery covers the total value of the item you are sending in terms of insurance; it’s eBay that cover it, not the postal service in the event of a claim/loss. The last thing I would be doing is purchasing separate postage outside of eBay in this case. That could open up a whole world of pain on a high value sale. Just use the eBay label provided.

1. No. Max comp is £75
2.No. you need special delivery and bump the cover up from the standard £750

Absolutely that. There is no way I’d be posting £1k eBay sale. You’d be a lot better off putting the lot on red at your nearest casino.

That’s incorrect I’m afraid. Royal Mail max compensation for tracked 24 items is £75, but you are you not dealing with the courier when you use Simple Delivery, eBay are. When you use SD eBay assume the risk above the couriers compensation level, and in the event of loss/damage will refund the buyer if they claim. As a seller you don’t have to do anything, eBay handle everything. I’ve been through the process when Evri lost a parcel I was sending.

Thanks that's good to know, I wrongly assumed eBay simply passed on the RM protection.

Excellent. As you said, the written word was more than confusing.

Well just to update, despite royal mail leaving the item in a bush (seriously) the buyer has confirmed delivery and left me feedback so thankfully it went ok.
