Given the royal family are now in the biggest pile of excrement for some centuries, I'm wondering how things would have turned out if Elizabeth Windsor had never become queen, EG Edward VIII stayed on the throne and produced an heir, or the monarchy been dispensed with at some point, what would they end up doing?

I'd guess.
Elizabeth - Racehorse trainer.
Phillip - Naval career, possibly leading to high rank.

Charles - No idea
Anne - Racehorse trainer
Andrew - Navy up to lieutenant commander or thereabouts, then trying and failing to make his fortune through dodgy business ventures.
Edward - Middle manager in a theatre.

Diana - Probably not married to Charles, married to a city banker, living in the West End maybe a childminder or housewife.
Fergie - Probably not married to Andrew, married to a stockbroker, living in the Cotswolds and no career.

Most of them would probably be happier.

Somewhere in a parallel universe Diana Spencer's minicab crashed in the Blackwall tunnel on the way home from Wetherspoons. One of her sons married an exotic dancer after he got chucked out of the Army, the other drove an ambulance for a living. Both are plagued by strange dreams in which their grandmother is parachuting out of helicopters

I think Andrew would’ve become a researcher in the field of dermatology and perspiration. He was destined to end up on the island, one way or another.

Edward VIII was never going to produce an heir with Wallis so Brenda would have become queen albeit 22 years later than in reality. What this might have done to the Royal family dynamic is open to question.

Off topic:

The only decent ones left (imo) are Princess Anne, William and Kate.

The rest are a waste of space.

I think it's mildly amusing that Charles has has to start a new job well past the age when most people retire.

Charles - eco-warrior, campaigner, protester; leader of a self-sufficient hippy commune in Northamptonshire and meets and falls in love with a troubled shy young nanny.
