Tuxedo - where to buy these days?

I need to replace mine and my shoes. I have no idea where to go these days. Ideally sub-£500 for suit and shoes. PH hive mind, any recommendations?

Why would you? Unless you’re going full Saville Row M&S is fine. Otherwise there’s John Lewis or Moss Bros etc.

A smart, well-fitted suit. Saville Row it will not be for something I use a small handful of times a year, I accept.

As for 'tuxedo', yes, I have also known it as a dinner suit but a search reveals the phrases to be readily interchangeable and I thought the use of tuxedo might elicit more responses.

John Lewis have very good range of options to suit most pockets, failing that, Huntsman and Hawes & Curtis do some nice suits.

I’d go M&S and if you have a decent physique you may want to find a tailor who can adjust it a little, as a lot of high street stuff is baggy around the middle if you buy shoulders to fit. Go for something that fits round the middle and you might well end up with it not sitting on your shoulders particularly well.

Suits and shirts are difficult to find well fitted unfortunately.

I bought a dinner suit from Burton menswear 30 years ago, as it was cheaper than renting one for every event at my university.

It still fits me. It gets an outing occasionally. It wasn't a bad investment.

My son borrowed my proper bow-tie recently.

I've no idea. They were the source of dinner suits for 90s students.

I have gone through a number of dress shirts. They were often a casualty of college balls.

It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it...get something nice and spend the rest of your money having it properly fitted by a real tailor.

M&S is always a good shout as you’re able to buy whichever size of trousers and jacket you need. Lots of other places assume there is some fixed relationship between chest and waist measurements, which means you’ll struggle to get a good fit unless you fit their template.

Given that I always think fit is relatively more important than fabric/construction (up to a point), I’d prioritise this.

Also, get a proper bow tie and learn how to tie it and make sure your shoes are half decent. It’s possible to make a cheaper suit look much better than its price tag with decent accessories.

30 years ago I was told that I wore a dinner suit well.

I even wore it whilst delivering boxes of Milk Tray to young ladies....by abseiling into dinner (for charity).

I still have the dinner suit, but not the hair.
