But you've seen it coming with your McGuffin brand meteorite detector. Fortunately the kids and pets are safe, and the OH has grabbed the photo albums and important paperwork, and you are fully insured. You only have time to save one item before everything is smashed to dust.

What do you grab and why?

A ladder.

I would climb onto the roof, and lay out there, face up and eyes wide open. I would finally relax.

Then, I would welcome the blessed relief.

Might be better to grab one of your children’s school books so you can learnt to read or count.

One item.

I'd spend so long procrastinating then looking for whatever I decide......it must be in this room, no, the bedside cabinet, no, garage, no, upstairs, no, other garage, no. splat.

I do know what Brian May would save though:

As long as I’ve got my cats, and I suppose Mrs DS, I don’t really care.

Ah - no. My Xbox.

Instead of taking one thing out, how about calling an impromptu house party for annoying neighbours, MIL etc?

The smallest meteor recorded to have hit someone's house was 340 grams (about two chicken breasts) and all that did was penetrate the roof.

If you're taking something that has the kinetic energy to destroy an entire house, chances are you're entire neighbourhood will be going with it.

Also how much warning? It takes about 4 hours for something to fall from geosynchronous orbit. This will vary depending on a lot of factors but if it's detected an imminent collision of a rock large enough to completely destroy a house, will you even have time to reach a minimum safe distance?

But this

If I had a meteorite detector then I'd presumably have insurance against the unplanned insertion of a near earth object.

I'd need the phone to call the insurance company.

Is it not possible to have something in between these two sizes?
