Got the email from the school this morning.

I remember him. I only had him for music while it was mandatory, before I opted out, but even after that I had dealings with him because he volunteered to take detentions.

I had quite a few detentions. getmecoat

I guess he wanted to be alone with boys unsupervised (it was an all boys school at the time) and with fewer witnesses.

He'd stand behind you to 'check your work' and put his hands on your shoulders and ruffle your hair.

fker.

I was fortunate. I guess it was music pupils he spent a lot of 1 on 1 time with, that really suffered.

Hard to process.

Not because I was abused by him but because if he's been there since 1982, don't try and tell me none of his colleagues at any point during the subsequent 40 years, had a clue what he was like?

That makes me angry.

When we were kids we all knew the teachers that were dodgy.

We made sure we looked after each other and vigorously resisted "I'll rub it better" when hit in the groin by cricket/rugby/football.

If we all knew the other teachers must have too. I've often wondered about this.

We had a teacher who had a real temper. There must have been 5 incidents of pushing students over and grabbing them round the throat.

I recently learnt that 20 years later he’s at the same school
And still has a reputation for it.

What a joke when he’d probably be out the door in 5 minutes for going against any woke stuff.

We still chuckle about the number of times this happened to me. Grabbed by throat, smashed against the wall & thrown out of the door.

One time I'd literally only just walked in & hadn't even had the chance to be naughty.

Wooden board cleaners as a projectile was another common event!

Ah, the 70s. Life was so much simpler then hehe

It wasn't for music.

Teachers rotated on who took detentions (from any subject).

We went to school on Saturdays and some detentions were on Saturday afternoons.

Pickthall, lived on site IIRC, and so volunteered to do a great many of them.

No doubt, under the premise of doing his colleagues a favour.

In a past career I was unfortunate enough to come across quite a few. The business was like a magnet to them. Ranging from the really bad (multiple jail sentences) to the lucky misses, one particular creep I had to take to a meeting at a council over his crb check where he was going to try to argue that his past misdemeanor (grooming and exposing himself to a very young female neighbour) should be overlooked as he was in the scouts and deeply involved with the church so "obviously wasn't a wrong un". More or less his words. Couldn't make it up. Thankfully the council saw sense and refused him contract work. Also had to suspend a couple over getting too close to young girls that hung around. Was it terrible judgement or were they.... I know what I think but they got away with nothing more than a slap on the wrists. (For obvious reasons the above is all kept vague).

You can often spot them, a number of features tend to crop up regularly. But by the same token that completely normal married, outgoing colleague could be one. Every day we probably walk past half a dozen and don't even realise.

One of my mum's best friends was arrested but made up a false story to make it seem like nothing so she offered all support.

It wasn't until he was up in court, that I found out what he'd been charged with, abuse of 5 minors with learning difficulties under his care.

fker got 7 years and everyone, including his family, disowned him. He deserved a much harsher sentence IMHO.

Thankfully he's ceased all contact with my mum and their mutual friends.

There was 2 kids in my brother's year in school who became pdf files. One could always get things on computers no one else could. Before t0rrenting and other means were popular, he was getting Gameboy roms and emulators from japanese sources back when Pokemon was barely out here. His case was really bad and he abused loads. Google Alex Tindal. The second was a bully and tried bullying my brother regularly. Me, being 3yrs older didn't like this so gave him a hiding. Wasn't smart about it, did it in full view of everyone in the main school corridor. Got a good few hits in before being suspended for the rest of the week. He was drugging girls under 14. In hindsight I should've hit him harder.

My claim to fame, I went on a lad's camping trip in the 1980s. The guy who drove us up to Scotland was something of a minor TV celeb. I did not know him before this trip (in any sense of the word). Fortunately there were too many of us for the tent, so he slept in his car...a mini.

He became rather more famous, then infamous and got locked up a few years back, getting caught up in the wake of Operation Yewtree!

Yep... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-26073155

On your birthday he would invite you in to his study for a Mars bar. It was weird, but there was no funny business. I was there in the 80s, so it appears he had stopped offending at that point. Certainly there was no inkling of this amongst the students.

I worked (now retired) in IT for years with a chap who had a bit of a reputation for liking the ladies. Quite common of him to make lewd comments etc.

Last year I got a call from a mutual friend saying that X had just gone down for paedophile offences. He was pretty shocked as they had been working on a contract away together and often gone out for a beer etc. The thing that amazed him was that the investigation had been going on for years and the guy went down for quite a long stretch.

During this time he had acted quite normally and never gave a sign that anything was amiss despite all the stress that he must have been under. He acted as though nothing was wrong and still had an eye on the ladies.

You can never tell what's going on under the surface.

He has got "that look" to him but I wonder if that is confirmation bias?

Yeah, we had one we all knew was dodgy.

Mr Harris, better known as 'Bummer Harris' laugh

This was '70s East London by the way, hence no beating about the bush with the nickname.

I've known two. First was a senior teacher at the school my boys attended. The crime occurred before he was a teacher, a good 'un, some 20 years ago. He went down for it.
While under investigation he was suspended, obviously. The reason for his suspension was kept quiet until the investigation finished and he was charged. In the mean time there was a petition to get him reinstated. A good few red faces there.
Second was a pupil at the same school. Nice lad, or that was the general opinion of him. Always ready to babysit, seems it was an excuse for some kiddy fiddling. He went down for that.

Few with tempers that definitely crossed the line at times ,

The ones I d suspected of Having ‘busy hands’ have likely long passed on by now, give me the creeps to think about .

Maybe I was just innocent at the time, but I genuinely can't think of any teachers remotely like that in the schools I went to. Not even a hint of it. One or two had a bit of a temper, but only 'shouty temper' rather than anything physical. I suppose they are all good at hiding it, or it wouldn't go on for 40 years as in the OP's case.

Mind you, I did recently find out that one of the teachers had an affair with the mum of one girl in my class. The girl was definitely one of the class hotties, so perhaps the mum was too. biglaugh

Every time one reaches court, it's plain that MANY knew over many years. So what stops bystanders from acting on our suspicions, or proof?

From my own experience - Irish schools - they were set up to be cult-ish, with priests being all- powerful. I was not abused, but know many who were.

One good reason for not taking on the catholic church is that they will go to any lengths to undermine the case against them. A friend was treated abominably - every trick in the book was used to paint them into a corner. Tactics were merciless; they can afford the most rapacious lawyers, and can spirit culprits abroad if needed.

So, I cheer when even 1 of these culprits face justice; it shows that SOMETIMES justice catches up
