Hi, any suggestions for synthetic insulation jacket that is warm but doesn't make me look like a Michelin man? Budget is around £125 and saw I could probably get Rab Cirrus Alpine online but any other suggestions. (For synthetic insulation it's so hard to gauge warmth of jacket which I know is personal preference but would be good to have some comparison).

Thanks for reading

What do you want to do in it? Why synthetic? Assume you want to be warm when wet? If so and you don’t mind the slightly ‘challenging’ appearance then Buffalo stuff is awesome for active outdoor use. Not sure on price these days mind you.

Columbia Omni Heat.

Basically a less bulky jacket but lined with that silver stuff emergency blankets are made of to reflect your heat back at you. Works well.

If you can find something with polartec alpha, then that.

I got a gore pro insulated which has it, and it's like witchcraft. Incredibly thin and light (although the gore pro bit means Mrs Sway constantly tells me it looks like I'm wearing a bin bag!) - you just don't notice it at all.

Which is to say, somehow it just maintains you at the perfect temperature. Doesn't matter what the weather is, or how much exertion you're doing, you just don't notice either heat or chill.

Like I say, witchcraft. Should probably find a non waterproof version that doesn't look like a bin bag!

I’ve got the Rab, just spent the weekend on a pit wall in Wales, perfectly snug and saw off a brief down pour as well.

You can't really go wrong with Rab. Main question is do you want synthetic or down? Unless really concerned about weight/compressability, synthetic is probably most versatile

Sportpursuit usually have some good deals on jackets but colours can be a bit challenging. The down Microlight Alpine jacket is the one you see everywhere for good reason. Cirrus is there for £59.99 if you can cope with bile yellow.

ETA Decathlon stuff is really decent at the price their own brands Wedze, Forclaz and Simond are worth looking out. The Simond stuff is credible mountaineering gear.

A little bit of budget creep but I have one of these:

Worn it in Finland in the winter and is brilliant. The furry bit is removable if you don't like it. And almost half price.

How are you getting on with the Cirrus? Thinking about one of them or the mountain equipment superflux.
