Dammit, the thread moved while I was typing 
Underwater gliders are a thing though, they use variable buoyancy to sink and rise, and then hydrofoils give them forward movement from that vertical movement. This means they can have a vey long endurance for a very small amount of power. They're used a lot of monitoring sea conditions, like salinity and temperatures and can stay at sea for months at a time.

I had thought that previously but it's not that straightforward. Just looked at a thread I read earlier today, it's on the same page but dumps me to the latest post rather than where I last was.... Others do though
Why is it that sometimes I click on posts in 'my stuff' and it takes me where I was before with a linebreak to show. Other times it ignores that and goes to the top of the page so you have to scroll down and figure out where you last were. There seems very little commonality to when this happens...

Ever since I joined PH back in 2001 I have had the threads display in descending order (ie. newest first). That way new posts are always on the first page. It probably looks a bit odd to most people but I've kind of got used to it and it works for me. But, yes, I agree that it seems fairly random whether or not you get the bar that tells you were you were up to last time. On the rare times that it shows up I actually find it a bit of an annoyance.
The horse thing is very interesting, the preteen pony phase, happy to literally shovel s

As for the sexual thang, it has been mooted that victorian ladies got a bit hot and bothered when in charge of a pony and trap gazing upon the steam rising for the shiny, muscular hindquarters of a chestnut gelding.

The red bar works all the time but only until you refresh something or post, when it resets to the current post. I therefore open any threads which interest me in new tabs all at the same time (so the red bar is at the last time I looked at PH). However it can take many minutes to read these, so I can end up posting a reply only to find that someone else has posted the same thing half an hour before.

It seems to me that if the last post you've read is the last one on the page, the "new" button dumps you at the top of that page rather than the start of the next page, which is where the first unread post is. I don't think it should work like that, but I know now that if I'm at the top of a page, that's probably why.droopsnoot said:

Generally it's to imply whatever or whoever the poster dislikes/disagrees with is not rational, ignorant or is arguing in bad faith.An example would be someone claiming that Ruritania's imposition of tariffs on Lilliputian imports is unfair, opposed by another suggesting that Lilliputian trading standards mean Ruritanian imports are subject to non-tariff barriers and that these are equivalent. The first person might then reasonably claim the second is playing the 'both sides are the same' card, often presented as "bUt BOtH SiDeS!".
