Moved from doing lots of longhaul flights with big assed check in case, to even more frequent short haul stuff - and really cannot be arsed with the drag of waiting for the dreaded luggage carousel...

So, time for new carryon case, plus laptop/travel bag combo.

Needs to pack enough for a week, and I'm really not a fan of wearing same clothes at the office then out in the evening. Am pretty proficient in 'efficient' packing, but every little helps!

I don't fly stingy budget Airlines, think KLM/BA/Air France rather than Ryanair or easyJet.

Something smart to go straight to the office with, then laptop bag that'll be good for heading back to the office each day - but when travelling can handle adding in tablet/book/headphones/'stuff' (including passport/wallet in easily accessible but secure spots).

I'm quite taken with the idea of one that'll 'combine' with the wheely bag. Prefer hard case to soft.

Budget is what it is, but not mental. No Rimowa please (even if they are sexy)!

Thoughts?

We are fans of Briggs and Riley in my house.

I have just bought the medium sized Big mouth

I like how it has a separate compartment with two spaces, one for laptop and one for iPad. I also like the big opening and it has some pockets but they don’t eat into the space. For me, it’s perfect for going to the office and then heading to the airport. It doesn’t not wear too big for daily use.

My wife has one of their carryon cases which seems very well built.

Thanks B&R are definitely spending big on advertising as I've seen lots whilst browsing!

Don't see them in airports (or at least I've not noticed them) - are they genuinely feeling like they're worth the £7-800 a combo set will be? That'd be absolute top end of what I'd want to spend - willing, but through gritted teeth that I'd then either regret or become a massive evangelist for in five years time as it just makes life easy and still looks as good as new, iyswim.

I bought the Backpack last Sunday from Bloomingdales and got a discount down to $225.

The carry on was a bargain. As they ramped up their marketing they offered people who worked in the malls where their stores were a 70% discount. I got the code passed to me.

Having said I bought both with discounts, that’s very unusual and not their normal model. I do think the carry on is a significant step up from most brands and would not be upset if I had paid full price.

My wife and I do a lot of travel and she loves the case. When I travel I’m long haul and take a checked bag. In fact, I’m sat in Newark airport as we speak with the back pack and very happy with it. I didn’t want anything too big or too compartmentalized. I have used the backpack as my daily all week for my commute into NYC. It’s something different to the Tumi backpacks everywhere.

I did consider the McLaren Tumi but came to the conclusion I couldn’t justify $1400.

You could try this ...

https://july.com/nz/luggage/carry-on-pro-sleeve/?m...

... though the snap-on laptop sleeve may be a bit small for what you're after.

I have the standard version (without the sleeve) and it's surprisingly good. Fitted everything I needed for a two and a half week trip recently.

Oh, that's very interesting...

See what you mean about the sleeve - only thing I'm wondering is taking a charger with me, but could work around that with the power bank and/or a small 'essentials' bag.

@H0b0 - cheers, I've shot my shot!

They look very tidy - thanks. Especially the aluminium Bugger Carry On, and Commuter Backpack... Both nicely classy.

Each to their own, I suppose! Live and let live, etc…

The backpack I mentioned has an unbelievable number of cubby hole compartments, and a really well thought out passport pocket. It’s brilliant.

Hasn't so far, so either not automated or timed out. If it does, for the saving I'll definitely grab both carry on and rucksack.

Victorinox Swiss army luggage, does a decent range of carry-on bags.

Victorinox Swiss army CH-97 2.0

I have one of their backpacks, which I use for extended travel; very robust, surprising amount of space considering size.

H0b0 - you have mail. Much appreciated!

Think I'm set now for a Briggs & Riley carry on, and really like one of the Victorinox day bags that's similar to my pilot bag I currently use (and have utterly abused).

Should be a nice combo, but I'll update with my thoughts once received and given a few test flights.

Not sure it will help on the luggage side, but a while back I picked up a Troop London messenger bag on the recommendation of this very forum, and for work travelling it's been brilliant - well put together, comfortable to carry and surprisingly spacious. I can get my laptop, tablet, few notes, chargers, BT headphones and two cartons of Duty Free in mine.

Oh, they're really very nice - doesn't mention, but is there a way of slipping it over the handle of a wheely case so it's 'locked on'? That's the one thing I'd really like compared to my current bag, which always decides to fling itself onto the floor at the worst moment!

Not sure on the new ones, but the one I got a few years ago doesn't have that sadly, I just act like it's 1997 and it's got "Technics" written on the side and carry it that way and treat the case separately - once on you don't really notice it.

Only better carry on I've ever used is my Burton rucksack from 2003 which has been all over the world with me - suspect they don't do anything in the look you're going for tho wink
