Discrimination against the old and ugly?
Discussion
I have just walked the dog and we are sitting in a cafe whilst I have a flat white and pastry.
There are five people serving. All of them are thin and attractive women under thirty. Just a coincidence? I suspect not. It is not the only cafe or restaurant I’ve been into with the same “coincidence”.
Strange how there are so many rules about non discrimination but not many to protect the old and less aesthetically pleasing!
Maybe it is because it is a trendy and boho type of cafe and that the less attractive can get such jobs, but only at Costa!

It's also likely that the only people applying are those types.
Also many applicants are friends of existing staff, so usually social groups have similar looks.
It works the other way as well. Have many places have you gone where the staff all look less attractive and not as slim.
It's why I only employ young attractive people so I can cling onto my youth lol

Or maybe the older people simply don't apply for a job where they'll be on their feet running around like blue arsed flies for hours on end, making hundreds of cups of coffee per hour and personally serving customers, all for minimum wage? When I watch people, it certainly seems easier to stack shelves at your own pace, or sit down at a checkout in a supermarket, again for the same minimum wage. Although Costa, Starbucks etc., are not restaurants with proper kitchens, any kitchen type environment is, at times, a very fast-paced, highly stressful work place. It's much more a young person's game than an older person's, and if you're fat, you'll struggle to move fast enough, so you won't last long. It's probably a self-selecting job rather than discrimination. People who think it's difficult and won't suit them probably don't even apply.
What sort of cafe was it? I find that the quieter, more traditional type cafes sometimes have older people serving, like they're retired and want a job that gets them out of the house and interacting with people. The more modern, hipster type places obviously attract younger staff who, unlike pensioners, aren't going to feel alienated by the type of vibe that these places have.

This.Although one thing I’ve always wondered is if it’s minimum wage, how are they affording their ££££ rent/mortgage? Doesn’t add up.
I live in a gentrified area of a city with the usual blight of 60 coffee shops per square metre. Where do all these people live?

Sometimes we see things differently because of how we thinkIs it a surprise that employees performing an active job on their feet all day are not overweight
Is it a surprise a minimum wage job is mostly performed by younger people with presumably less work experience.
Younger folk also tend to take much more pride in their appearance, make up etc so there’s less of them deemed unattractive.
Switch your location to a building site & you’d find similar with the labourers who are generally younger & fitter too.

Last time I looked, young thin, attractive women with long hair didn’t make up 100% of all young people under 30 who would want a waiting job. nordboy said:
There's a motor factors place near me that delivers parts to all the local car garages.
Guess who 99% of their delivery drivers are, yep, young females. No wonder they're busy. Not just the cafe trade.
I suspect the cafe owner is a man and maybe he is missing a trick. In my experience it seems that there are more female than male customers in such cafes so perhaps if he is only employing beautiful people he should also get some good looking young men, although perhaps women are less shallow and wouldn’t just frequent a cafe because there are good looking staff.Guess who 99% of their delivery drivers are, yep, young females. You are basing your entire opinion off one visit to one cafe. Not really enough to start bandying around 100% of waiting staff are x.If you want a waiting job apply for one.

I’d wager they’d make up more than 75%This is PH, someone’s bound to own a cafe, can we create a fake job add & find out?
(But let’s not go as far as is the h@rr0ds recruitment process which is probably what’s in the back of our minds & driving much of these thoughts)

. Seems that you are argumentative so let’s make it clearer.
In my eyes probably around 5-10% of young women are attractive. I don’t think my views are that different from others, as celebrities that others find attractive I generally find attractive too and I don’t generally find people attractive that others think are plain or ugly. Clearly we don’t all find the same people attractive but most people generally agree.
Women are only 50% of the population so women I find attractive women make up 2.5% - 5%. Yet all four servers at the cafe were within that small percentage. It could be coincidence but I’ve noticed the same coincidence at other cafes or places with customer facing roles over many years.
Some people on PH really could start an argument in an empty room!

Personally I think it's way more than 5% who are good looking.

You do realise how funny you sound with this statement? Accusing others of wanting an argument and then arguing yourself more than he had!
