I’m currently trying to obtain my grandfathers war record. He was in the Royal Artillery and is buried in Imphal, India.

As far as I know, he died when his gun blew up but that is all.

I applied through the Ministry of Defence who referred me to the National Archives. They have now responded that they need to confirm the physical record and have ordered it from the repository.

They also state that:

“This record is currently closed under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and will need to be sensitivity reviewed before we can determine whether it is possible to open it to the public.”

Is this normal or would there be a particular reason it is closed? Just wondering if anyone has had similar.

Don't know if you've read this:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-dec...

There's a bit on FOI considerations. There could be something sensitive in the record that they can't release?
