I didn't want to derail another thread with this comment and I'm not sure how true it is but I'm paraphrasing another poster who said that the people they know who are truly wealthy seem to live ordinary lives and I think I've seen the same.

In contrast, some of my friends on the lowest incomes seem to spend most.

I remember a discussion where someone said "Have you ever noticed how tight rich people are?"
I responded "How do you think they got rich?"

But once you have everything you need to live a comfortable life, you don't need to keep spending. Those that do spend to be new money who like to flash their wealth. Old money types prefer to be much more understated about their wealth.

I agree, I am wealthy beyond belief but very rarely spend on anything frivolous.

I think that's most likely rubbish.

I worked at my fair share of wealthy people's properties.

There's nearly always a gardener and a cleaning as the absolute minimum.

More often of steady trickle of trades, au pair, team of gardeners, team of housekeepers etc etc.

That doesn't offset the fact they drive an old Volvo and holiday in Norfolk.

I'd be surprised if that's true.

Even if you don't have any extravagant spending habits you will generally spend more on food, a bills etc.

There will be wealthy people who have quite ordinary spending habits, but there are lots of people who really have to budget. Something a wealthier doesn't have to worry about.

A book I am currently reading made a statement to the effect of:-

"For the first time in history, the poorest of society are the most obese".

My benefit claiming SiL regularly has Dominos pizza delivered. I have never had food delivered to my house in my life

Luxury goods are a tax on the poor. Anyone with real money gets the stuff for free.

To quote Withnail, "Free for those who can afford it, very expensive for those who can't"

I've never had a Dominos Pizza, delivered or not. £15 for a pizza is more than I am willing or able to spend.
I'm not sure whether that means I am richer or poorer than your SiL

I agree.

Cars for example I don’t see wealthy people with lease cars which must be the most expensive way to run a car. Instead they are likely to buy outright and run them for decades. Proper old skool wealth.

Guess if you bought solar and battery storage a while ago you’ll be getting paid to produce electric while folk who probably could do with help with their bills wouldn’t be able to afford to invest in this.

You don't get rich by giving it away... The wealthiest 2 people I knew were so damn tight it was unreal. Think having a bbq and they put a pile of charcoal on consisting of about 3 pieces!! He was from Yorkshire though...

I’ve had next door’s delivered to my house several times. Does that count?

They don’t appear to work, have two kids in there, the place reeks of marijuana, and have regular call outs from the police, who seem to be about as good as finding them as the deliveroo driver. I got their breakfast once!

I personally know two multi millionaires very well, and they spend money 'liberally'.

Both have multiple houses in different countries, staff to do 'stuff', car collections to die for, and £1k for a meal out for four is not uncommon.

I'm sure there are many frugal rich people... but plenty splash the cash.
