After years of not wearing suits for work or indeed anything else, i now find myself needing to buy one or maybe two for work and occasions over the coming months.

I've had made to measure suits in the past but i don't think i can be bothered with the outlay or the hassle of repeated visits.

Where is a good off-the-peg option (i'm looking in the north west really) that's maybe sub £500?

shirts too for that matter...

I guess it depends on your body shape and style you’re going for.

Tbh Marks isn’t a bad shout for a work suit or maybe J.Lewis. I’ve always found that I go to a seamstress to get the suit jacket tweaked.

Outlets be it Gunwharf or Bicester will give you access to high street brands (Paul Smith, Boss, Hackett) at a cheaper price

I don't own any but Suit Supply are in or around that price bracket if you're prepared to risk online and can get your fit right.

High St I'd agree with checking M&S although I haven't bought there in years. House of Fraser probably have something.

I've very little need of a suit and don't like lots of shoulder padding so I've a Ralph Lauren one bought on the cheap in the US which I'd recommend if an option but TK Maxx probably do them from time to time.

You said North West, Cheshire Oaks 3 or 4 suit shops there, can usually get a small discount as well. BIL got one for my wedding from one of the shops managed to wrangle another 10% off.

could do but the idea makes me feel a bit old (even though I probably am target market now!)

yea probably a good shout. Last time I went there it seemed like it was full of clothes which looked closer to knock offs than the real thing and wasn't even cheap! I'll give it a go again.

Large shoulders, large chest, narrow waist, t-rex arm length. I just assume I'll be paying 40-80 quid to get a suit altered any time I buy one.

I use Marks and Spencer or Antich

https://www.cj-antich.com/retail

I have bought from Slaters in the past but the quality of most of their suits was not so good.

Their Autograph range has quite contemporary cut suits.

I find Brook Taveners does a good range of suits that fit pretty well. Their staff seem to know their onions as well, which always helps. Worth seeing if there's an shop at a local 'discount village' as they do some decent sales as well. Shirts are well made for the money as well smile

Have you got a Slaters near you? They'll do made to measure for pretty much any realistic budget and they'll look better than off the peg.

Marks are good enough. Much more youthful in style now, it's not all old fashioned stuff for pensioners. Also handy in that extra pairs of trousers are easy, and not overpriced.

Then altered for about the cost you're suggesting.

Agree on the separates. A disadvantage with some of the more expensive off the peg stuff is the assumed drop. Tight jacket or baggy waist. Neither is a good look.

Living near an M&S outlet I do occasionally look but it’s rarely their better stuff in there. But their jackets do seem a more modern cut. The bottom of the jacket in my chest size no longer goes past my fingertips smile. Slight exaggeration but agree they’re a good shout.

Thats a good point on the second pair of trousers, at least as long as your waistline is under control, stops the shiny backside on trousers, I used to swap the trousers week to week

It read like Blown2CV was the OP, then you were answering a question to him under the CJ account.

If just jumping in, then fair enough.

M&S have their "sartorial" range I think it's called - often not really kept in stock in store, but I've ordered into store a number of times to try on without obligation.

Last M&S suit I bought was pretty good, not sure if it would take daily wear but I only need it once a month. I like M&S as they are one of the few that do a 29" inside leg.

Otherwise JL or Slaters if you have one.

Be aware outlet garments are usually designed and made for outlet. They are not normally the same product sold in dedicated stores.

No worries. I’ve owned one of their sartorial suits in the past. It might still be in the house somewhere. Decent suit but it was one I didn’t like the shoulder padding on.

Slaters, they have a massive range and adjust the fit as part of their very reasonable pricing. Avoid the cheaper options, they are pretty open about those being for people looking for a wear once option (court, wedding etc.). The mid to higher price suits are really well made and will last well with regular wear, with their adjustment service the fit is normally really good too. My experience is much better quality than Marks or John Lewis generally at a lower price.
