I have an occasional fire on a shingle beach.

The problem is the flint stones explode sending flint shrapnel out.

To protect my eyesight I try to put the fire off the shingle but it's not always possible.

I'm walking to the spot so can't carry a heavy firepit. A lightweight forepit doesn't look man enough. (Driftwood fires frequently feature quite heavy wood.) Also I'd rather not spend much cash on something that gets only occasional use.

Is there another way to manage this problem? Can you build a fire on a welding mat, for instance? Is there a trick I haven't thought of?

Some kind of mesh steel sheet? Fairly lightweight.

That would be perfect but such a thing doesn't seem to exist except in smallish purpose made squares.

Large baking tray type thing?

One of those fireproof mats that I use when doing plumbing with a blow torch

Foil?

Water under the stones?

Fire blanket

All above are ideas, not sure if actual solutions

That should be plenty (!), rigged up with some sticks/poles to elevate off the floor.
