Ah well, I've had a good run, I'm a smoker, I'm a drinker and there's nothing better than enjoying a few cigarettes with a couple of beers on a lunchtime. I don't smoke at home and I'm all for the banning of smoking in indoor public places, but it now seems as though I won't even be able to smoke in a pub garden anymore.

Knowing my luck it'll be alcohol next. Or maybe breathing.

It won’t do the hospitality industry any good.

Are they planning on banning smoking on the pavement too?

Yes. Outside Universities and Schools. I could quite easily go to the pavement next to the pub for a cigarette but I fear the pub trade will disappear completely not long after the ban.

Why would anyone chose to smoke? It stinks, it makes you stink, everyone else has to put up with the stink, it’s a pathetic drug for the weak willed.

Not sure about the hospitality comment, none of our friends group smokes and we all happily spend a lot of money sitting in beer gardens when the weather is decent enough.

Mr Bags, why don't you smoke at home then?

I’m an anti-smoker, hate it, but banning it from beer gardens is a step too far if Starmer really plans to bring this in.

You could say much the same about alcohol if you're prone to hysterics, so maybe they should ban that from beer gardens too. It makes people noisy, rowdy, violent, and is quite anti-social, as well as being addictive and causing various health problems.

It's a bit painful when eating outside, knowing that means you're likely to be near a smoker.

Well that's where they are going to be if you ban them from the beer garden...

Another nail in the coffin for Pub trade.

As if the £7 pint wasn't enough.

The sooner smoking is stopped the better.

A stupid, pointless, expensive, harmful habit that has no place in the 21st century.

I'm not entirely sure, just something I've never done, I also don't drink at home. I do however enjoy a beer and a smoke at the local.

People should have the right to do as they wish. If it may be harmful to others then they should not be able to do it in public, but in their own space its fine by me. And if you don't like it don't do it.

But

Smokers do affect non-smokers by smoke drifting across in a pub garden, or where ever.

Plus, smokers are more likely to be unhealthy and their treatment on the NHS is paid for by all of us.

As an ex smoker - last time i smoked was 11 years ago - i couldn't agree more with this statement, i hate the habit now and walking through someone's smoke make me feel sick but it's their choice, so if they want to smoke then let them do it.

But why should you have to walk through someone else's cigarette smoke?

Bear in mind that for a lot of people it's not a choice, it's an addiction.

A serious addiction at that - studies have shown that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and getting off the isn't easy (I'm told)

So it's patronising to say it's for the 'weak-willed'

If you want to go down that road, we can talk about people who eat unhealthily, who don't exercise, who drink too much.
The consequence of a state-funded health service is that everyone pays for everyone, no matter their lifestyle.

I'm not a smoker so this doesn't affect me but banning smoking outside seems very nanny-state. I would only prohibit smoking in outside areas where food is being served as people tend to be in closer proximity in those cases and there's nothing worse than enjoying a meal when someone lights up on the table next to you.

How on earth can they realistically ban smoking in the garden. Just walk a few steps to the car park.
