Right now, I'm sitting in a McDonalds doing some work between appointments. In walked this young girl (10-12 ish age) with her grandfather (presumably). As she walked past my table, I noticed she had a fur tail pinned to the back of her trousers.

This particular McDonalds is in a relatively rural area and trendy stuff isn't typically here. I say that because the old man is wearing a hat of an RV brand so I presume they're not from around here and on a trip.

Obviously I didn't grab a photo...but WTF?! Is this a thing? Are kids walking around wearing tails?!

It's a furry! (Don't google that at work!) given the age it's probably innocent and she's got a fascination with a particular type of animal, although an outside chance she's a non-binary cat..

It's just like wearing a batman outfit or Disney princess dress, no?

Interesting. Saw a similar aged girl wearing a fox tail in Padstow earlier this week. I asked my daughter if it was a thing and she just looked at me all confused.

I expect I’ll be a proud father with a tailed daughter by this time next week!

we had a kid at school with a tail, about an inch and a half long base of his back/buttcrack,
we asked several times if he could wag it, but no,

apparently most born with a tail have them removed,

Having had an incident in which I forgot to put the glider wheel down before starting the landing approach, resulting in me letting go of the joystick during the flare to work the undercarriage lever*. I later remarked to my girlfriend that a prehensile tail would have been very useful at that moment.
Soon after, she took the grandchildren to the zoo and returned with a clip-on black and white lemur tail for me...

  • A really bad idea, as the lever could have come back and broken my arm if I hadn't got it locked in time.

It was definitely clipped to her trousers. Your last line is worrying and probably shows that I’m a little sheltered as I have no idea what you’re referring to.

There was also a boy at my school, same description of a tail, he was really embarrassed about it, especially in communal changing rooms and showers for the gym.
