A friend is concerned about his grown up son. Another friend saw a man go in to the son's house wearing a stab vest. This man had no police numbers on his shoulder, came out of a new small Peugeot van, was in the sons house, with the son, for 30 minutes and came out with what is thought to be two A4 file binders.

The son is a contractor.

The son has told his father, when asked, that it was just a friend looking at doing his accounts, but the father has doubts and thinks it may be an HMRC or VAT issue.

What we don't know is who would wear a stab vest when on a pre arranged meeting at someone's house? any ideas?

Thank you, we hadn't thought of bailiffs. thankfully the only experience I have of them is on TV programs.

The bit that throws me off that idea is that he took away two files, instead of, for a example, a TV.

Ten minutes ago I phoned my friend and told him that I was asking for opinions, his son was overheard saying to his wife, 'I could go to jail for this'.

Edit, his father isn't short of money, unless it was a huge debt I think he would have been asked for money.

The jail thing worries me, I can only think of some sort of of fraud.

Given it's all third party hearsay, do you know the bailiff wasn't carrying any paperwork when he first entered the house?

He was seen getting out of his small white Peugeot van, he was carrying a clipboard, no uniform, just a stab vest.

His father is concerned by the fact that someone went to see his son wearing a stab vest if not the police, he knows that his son takes payments in cash and may not be declaring the income and so HMRC was his first thought, especially as he took files away. He just didnt know if HMRC made home visits wearing a stab vest.

Wearing just a stab vest? Very brave, crown jewels out on display.

Its a puzzle.

Anyway Guys, I appreciate you giving some thought to this, if its not HMRC or VAT people or the council I really don't know.

The combination of the stab vest, taking two large files away and the idea that the son is plainly lying to his father causes concern.

I would suggest that those who don't know when to use "who" versus "whom" might consider wearing a stab vest - especially in the vicinity of English language pedants smile

Yes I saw that, I wouldn't normally use the word Whom without some thought, I can only apologise and assume I pressed the M instead of the space bar.

edit, someone has kindly changed the whom to who, thank you.

Are you sure it's a stab vest? It could be just a utility vest. I've got one myself.

I didn't see it but it was described as heavily padded at the front, sleeveless and with Velcro fastening at the back.

The other thought the has occurred to us is an immigration officer, the son has brought over Spanish nationals who are working for him, but I would not have thought that any dodgy dealings would result in jail time, maybe so?

Has anyone asked the son what’s going on?

His father, he said that the man with a stab vest was just a friend doing his books, shrugged his shoulders when asked why he was wearing the vest.

Obviously lying to his dad,

Possibly not, he seems to be perceived as possibly dangerous..
